Proposal to rename the article

Per the electronic Slovene-English dictionary published by Amebis (written by Anton Grad and Henry Leeming), the correct English translation of Slovenska matica would be not Slovene Matrix, but Slovene Literary Society. As this is the most common English name, the article should probably be moved to that title. --Eleassar ^{my talk} 18:38, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I think one source is to little. It is understandalbe for a dictionary to give the meaning of a word or of a phrase, but we are talking of an official name here, not its meaning (the meaning can be explained in the first paragraph and I agree the translation suggested by the dictionary you quoted can be added). Can you find other sources that refer to the SM as "Slovene Literary Society"? Does the publishing house itself use that name when refered to in English? If not, I suggest to keep the title, as it is the case of other "maticas" (Matica srpska, Matica hrvatska, Matica slovenská) etc. Besides, the name of most companies (including pub. houses) is not translated in the titles. I've made a short google research and it seems that Slovene Literary Society is used only by the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. And even they put it in brackets, so it seems more of a translation/interpretation of the original name than an alternative name. On the other hand, the term "Slovenska matica" is used in many English texts (including some by the Slovenian government). Of course it's just google, but it seems that Slovene Literary Society is defenetely not the most common English name. Viator slovenicus (talk) 19:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Slovenska matica is not English, but Slovene name. I concur that results found using Google are not very numerous, but more numerous than other possible translations (e.g. EB 1911, RKC, LIC etc translate it so). As for the institution itself, I'm not sure what it uses as they provide their webpage only in Slovene. We can also keep the Slovene title, but I don't believe the proper translation is Slovene Matrix. Yes, you're right, this may be literally translated as Matrix but imo it would be better to translate this as Society (e.g. Glasbena matica is translated as Philharmonic Society by Amebis' dictionary). --Eleassar ^{my talk} 19:47, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

You're absolutely right about the propper translation. As you can see, I haven't changed that in the article, I just added the comment about the literary meaning of the name. I googled it only in English pages, and it turned out that it the Slovene name is also used in English. Which is kind of logical: traditionally, the SM was a learned society, but nowadays is only a publishing house and it is quite ususal to use original names for companies. Some companies do translate their names (a Slovene example is Mohorjeva družba which translates its name both to German and English - but, strangely enough, not to Italian where it always uses the original), but most don't. Article title

First, should this article be moved to Slovene Literary Society, as demanded by WP:ENGLISH. Second, if it stays at its current name, should matica be capitalised per conventional English capitalisation? --Eleassar ^{my talk} 16:11, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

As the name of an institution, I would agree with the article name Slovene Society based on WP:ENGLISH and sources like these: 1, 2, 3, 4. However, as a publisher (in bibiographic data) "Slovenska matica" should be retained. Doremo (talk) 10:32, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
