"still 40 years ago counted 30,000 inhabitants, but now hardly holds a few hundred"
editWhat did Mr. Harmann mean by this? I dont get the implication here. I dont think the number of how many people were in Kawkaban or are in Kawkaban are reliable. In Yemen, families often don't give the right answers to those who count people because the families believe that would decrease their number or they would get evil eyes. In any case, I dont think that quote is needed.--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 06:28, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
He could have been implying that most of the people have travelled to the city of Sana'a when it was modernized. However, it is still unclear.--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 06:34, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- Herman Burchardt visted Yemen in the early 20th century. It would be interesting to see what historical event in Yemen, say, in the late 19th century, may have precipitated an exodus of Kawkaban's population. Perhaps it had something to do with the Turkish invasion, or perhaps the Great Famine (المجاعة الكبرى) in 1905 decimated its population, just as it did in Sana'a, especially if Kawkaban was besieged by enemy troops. In any case, I do not know the answer.Davidbena (talk) 13:39, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Kawkaban → Shibam Kawkaban – The current title is inaccurate: Shibam and Kawkaban are distinct settlements that are neighbors. Wilson's 1989 Gazetteer of Historical North-West Yemen has two separate entries, one for Shibam and one for Kawkaban. The entry for Shibam (p. 198) says that "it is overlooked by its fortress-town of Kawkaban at the summit of the cliffs to the south-west of it", while the entry for Kawkaban (p. 284) describes it as "the fort of Shibam and large enough to be a sizeable settlement in its own right". Additionally, the current administrative division is called Shibam Kawkaban District, and the seat is located at Shibam, rather than Kawkaban.
My proposal is to either 1) have separate articles for the two places, or 2) have a single combined article, with the title being Shibam Kawkaban. Right now I prefer option 2 because I don't think there would be enough content to justify splitting. The name "Shibam Kawkaban" conveniently both disambiguates this Shibam from Shibam Hadramawt and also indicates that this article is also about Kawkaban. 3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 22:08, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
- Support. The page has much significant page history, and the topic seems notable enough but the current title is seriously ambiguous. IMO both Shibam and Kawkaban should be disambiguation pages. Andrewa (talk) 23:29, 15 March 2021 (UTC)
Updating article after requested move
edit@3 kids in a trenchcoat: Now that the requested move has been closed, you might be interested in updating the article. I am not sure how to do it since it looks like it will involve more than replacing words in the article with the new name. ~ Aseleste (t, e | c, l) 03:42, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
