Terminology

Proposed merger of the article

I'd like to propose information contained in this article be added to the List of cities in Croatia and the Municipalities of Croatia articles, instead of having this particular article around. I propose this because term "naselje" does not designate an administrative division in Croatia, i.e. it is not the smallest unit of Croatian territory in any practical sense of the phrase. Meaning of "naselje" is exactly the same thing as English "settlement" so there's no real justification for the article per se. On the other hand, information contained in the article is useful in terms of distinguishing between say, "Zadar" as a settlement (naselje) and "Zadar" as a city (grad) - the latter being an administrative division in the country, containing the former. The same applies to e.g. settlement of "Brestovac" vs municipality of "Brestovac" (containing the former) - hence proposed merger to both cities and municipalities articles. The census bureau indeed provides a breakdown of data by individual settlement but that is not really novel, nor unexpected - and it certainly does not create a separate tier of administrative divisions in Croatia.--Tomobe03 (talk) 22:29, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't quite see the benefit of duplicating this content in those two articles and not having a single place to link to from countless municipality articles that mention the concept. The point is that there is virtually no content in this particular article that could not be summed up by a single sentence - even if that turns out to be in two or more articles. Term "naselje" actually corresponds to incorporated place rather than census-designated place because the latter need not correspond to physical settlements and the former does. In essence naselje=incorporated place, so perhaps it would be possible to have the article Place (Croatian Bureau of Statistics) modeled on the Place (United States Census Bureau), along with consistently renaming/wikilinking "naselje" through corresponding articles which now may or may not have that article linked? If so, I'd be willing to add a detailed explanation to the renamed article and search for link candidates. Conversely, a sentence or two at the most would suffice in a couple of articles to explain what "naselje" is.--Tomobe03 (talk) 19:58, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't think incorporated place matches exactly because of the reason you mentioned before - there's no administration or jurisdiction that implicitly goes along with being called a naselje. The amount of content may be small, but it's still a distinct topic and because it has a specific non-vernacular definition, I don't think it fits in a wiktionary entry. If you insist on an English title, I guess Settlement (Croatia) would be most straightforward and sufficiently precise. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 18:38, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, IMO the native title comes off as a counterpart to "city" or "municipality" unlike English title, besides being (at least partially) self-explanatory to English readers. Not that I'm bent on changing this, but looking at the Administrative divisions of Croatia article that was the impression I got - I honestly believe such a change would be beneficial.--Tomobe03 (talk) 12:27, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
