Relevance
editThe basic flaw of this article is its lack of pragmatic information: Sabayon is a (relatively) small player, so one of the main questions in the mind of the reader is exactly, what is different about it? or even more pragmatically, why should I use it instead of Gentoo?. The article does not say whether Sabayon addresses a specific hardware situation (e.g. small systems, tablets, SBC), a specific user group, a specific area of application (desktop, server, embedded...) or some particular need (ease of use, graphical glamour, high security). All I get from the article so far is that Sabayon has yet another package manager. But there must be something more, right? (Baffo (talk) 14:39, 23 January 2009 (UTC))
- Please refrain from adding such irrelevant sections full of stupid questions to the talk page without doing a minimal amount of research before. Thank you.

editPlease update the image for SabayonLinux, it is not v3.2 anymore! --Anonymous —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.87.3.120 (talk) 03:49, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- Done. Updated to Sabayon 3.5 Tautrimas (talk) 12:30, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
BiCapitalisation
editI don't think it's spelled Sabayon Linux. I think it's actually spelled SabayonLinux. Should we move the page? Felixwells 13:38, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, doing so now. When its presented in graphic form its broken, but the home page shows it used together in more than one place.--Crossmr 21:28, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually I see both used on their website (and on distrowatch). --MarSch 16:51, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Sabayon will do.
- Actually I see both used on their website (and on distrowatch). --MarSch 16:51, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Mac Mini
editThere is no specific build for Mac Mini, at least that I can find on the site. Does anybody have some evidence, or should it be removed? 24.211.230.92 15:05, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
- Somebody probably got the idea that there's a Mac Mini version from the mini version of SabayonLinux available for x86 and x86_64. I'm fairly certain that there is no Mac Mini version, so I'm removing the part that mentions it. Chickencha 02:42, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- The mini version is refering to a cd image, instead of a dvd image. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.229.164.158 (talk) 22:59, 18 December 2006 (UTC).
Sabayon and Gentoo
editIsn't Sabayon just an overlay to Gentoo? I mean - I believe that you can install Gentoo and add sabayon overlay and get the same effect as installing Sabayon from DVD. I'm not 100% sure but I strongly believe that Sabayon is a pre-configured Gentoo (Something like Kubuntu, Ubuntu and so on, one system, different packages on start). If I'm not wrong, then it is quite an important thing and should be added to the article. Aaron LoveP 22:03, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- I think that the kernels between the two are different. Sabayon probably compiles it's own kernel because it focuses on everything working hardware-wise out-of-the-box. I don't think Gentoo has that same focus. But as I have not used Gentoo, I might be incorrect. Aroni125 (talk) 00:45, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
What's the point?
editWhy should you use Sabayon? From the official site I get the impression that you should use it because it looks cool. Is there another reason? 84.59.117.191 21:09, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- It is as configurable as gentoo with easy install and option to use binary packages instead of compiling from source - combines configurability and usability. 89.171.49.148 14:18, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
- It is easier to use because certain hardware components that do not work in other distributions work under Sabayon by default because of its focus on out-of-the-box compatibility. Aroni125 (talk) 00:49, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Notability
editI'm requesting that this article not be deleted, merged, or redirected on the grounds that this article can be improved to meet the notability guidelines. It's becoming a popular distro and more than just an overlay. I'll try to spend a bit of time on ensuring this article meets the notability guidelines soon when I get the chance. Bradkoch2007 (talk) 13:46, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- I don't have the expertise (yet) to contribute much here, but I agree with Bradkoch2007 that Sabayon is notable, as are all relatively popular linux distros. This article clearly needs work, but I don't favor deletion0nullbinary0 (talk) 02:36, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- I agree that the article now (version Nov-08) have no problem on notability. The introduction is right to describe Sabayon is an active Linux distribution. I think the notability notice should be removed.--Kittyhawk2 (talk) 05:52, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- The article still does not meet the General Notability Guideline, specifically with the sources being
allmostly primary sources. We need to use secondary sources so that the GNG can be satisfied. But I agree with Bradkoch2007, deletion is inappropriate for this article because it has secondary sources not yet in this article that can be used. My search turned up a number of articles on Sabayon Linux... and Sabayon Brulee (Search term: Sabayon). I do not see any other problem with this article meeting this guideline, however. 75.30.85.42 (talk) 14:03, 18 March 2009 (UTC)- I didn't notice that I was logged out. Aroni125 (talk) 14:06, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- And I didn't notice there was a solitary secondary source before I added one. Aroni125 (talk) 14:25, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
I have added several sources and removed the box regarding using one source. If anyone still believes this document does not meet the GNG guidelines please let me know. Thank you.--Jasohall (talk) 18:13, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Installation Section
editI have rewritten the install section to be more informative as well as stripping out some obvious or pointless statements. Here is the previous content for reference purposes.
Although the distribution is a LiveDVD (or in the case of the miniEdition, a LiveCD), installation to hard disk can be initiated once the system is fully booted. Sabayon Linux uses the Anaconda installer. In previous releases, the Gentoo Linux Installer was used. The install process is designed to be simpler than a typical Gentoo install, which requires more extensive knowledge of the operating system (particularly for the compilation of the Linux kernel). Several options are offered before booting off the DVD, like launching games directly after the process or browsing the Internet anonymously. A feature included is a program which plays music during the boot process.
Be my guest to modify the current section (or the entire page) as you see fit. After all, it is Wikipedia. Also, note that the DVD features were intentionally left out as they are unrelated to the Installation process. If we wanted to start a LiveDisto section then that would be a more appropriate place to put that information. Bradkoch2007 (talk) 19:36, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
Features Section
editLXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) can also be installed via Entropy (specifically, package lxde-base\lxde-meta). Should that be added to this section with the other window managers? It could be turned into a list, including yet more WMs, such as Ratpoison (package x11-wm\ratpoison) Aroni125 (talk) 23:17, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
MiniEdition: When
editThe "recently" in the MiniEdition section is unclear. Aroni125 (talk) 18:53, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- The mini edition has become deprecated and has not been released in cycle with the 5.x branch so it should be removed or reworded to make it clear that it is in fact deprecated.
What's it for?
editCan't tell from the sabayon website, can't tell from this article either. What's this distribution for? Judging solely from the screenshots and the video on the Sabayon website, it kind of looks like it's aimed at Linux gamers - but who knows? Is it just another eyecandy distro, or, is there something unique about the eyecandy? Is it just another "hardware compatibility out of the box", or, is there something unique about its hardware compatibility out of the box? Does it come packaged with multimedia productivity tools, or scientific NASA orbit optimization algorithm software, or, like What's it for? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.254.85.70 (talk) 07:49, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- What is windows for? or ubuntu or suse? Its designed to be a simple, quick, easy, good looking, working out the box distro on a solid gentoo base.Thev00d00 (talk) 13:55, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- You have got to know that's completely unhelpful. Regarding "Its designed to be a simple, quick, easy, good looking, working out the box distro on a solid gentoo base", OK, you know what, I already stated I know those things, and you didn't answer the questions I asked - about those things.
- Regarding "What is windows for?", OK, you know what, Windows is for everything. We can't customize and redistribute it. Ubuntu, SUSE and Gentoo all have notable sub-species which have been created and provided to meet specific needs/wishes, so, that rhetoric was just wanknoise too.
- If there's nothing unique, special, customized, niche-filling about Sabayon, I think I'm gonna support those above. If some do-it-yourselfer created a Gentoo package in his mom's basement and got 10 friends to use it, that would not make Sabayon something that deserves encyclopedic treatment. Now, maybe that's not the reality, but, to be blunt, that's the impression which Sabayon's website gives, and I've looked and asked for additional information which would save this article from getting dumped to the not notable bin.
- I asked to be disabused of this impression and instead I got condescended to by an obvious Sabayon fanboy/apologist. Is there anyone else around here who can be more informative, helpful or sincere on this subject? Thanks, --76.254.85.70 (talk) 20:02, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- No. And now please go back to the Ubuntu forums.
- It's a mixed (both binary and compile-from-source are options) version of Gentoo that works out-of-the-box. It's different from Arch because it works out-of-the-box and uses the portage tree for its package sources. It's different from Gentoo because it works out-of-the-box and binary is an option for all packages. It's "for" people who like Gentoo's way of doing things, but who want a binary option and/or a fast install that doesn't require hunting down the right drivers. VampireCoffee (talk) 07:51, 11 October 2009 (UTC)
- This.

MocaccinoOS
editWhen the first new Sabayon Linux then be called MocaccinoOS be published we should probably rename the article and write a "historical Sabayon Linux" section. --Leo Navis (talk) 10:05, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
