Impossible in the WW2 US Navy

edit

The African American actor Joel Fluellen plays a member of the crew. Impossible in WW2 and very uncommon in the submarine service even at the time the film was made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.245.132.22 (talk) 07:01, 18 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not true. Blacks did serve aboard subs, even if only as the officers stewards. However, during combat, they had their combat stations just like any other member of the crew.

SUB WARFARE

edit

Can somebody explain here in the talk page, and maybe add to the article, an explanation whether the movie is accurate in its depiction of a head-on torpedo attach as being rare and risky? 206.192.35.125 (talk) 13:39, 12 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, Down the throat shots were rare and apparently risky, according to the Wikipedia article about them. Kdammers (talk) 06:32, 10 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Before or after the Attack on Pearl Harbor?

edit

The section on "Adaptation from the novel" starts by claiming that, "The period covered by the book extends from before the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 until the end of the war." I checked the 1983 edition of the book. The first paragraph of the novel includes, "The story ... begins ... right after Christmas, 1941."

If someone has easy access to the 1955 edition, I'd be interested in seeing if it's any different. However, I would expect it to be the same on this point.

My concern is that claiming the story begins "before the bombing of Pearl Harbor" is that it suggests that the Roosevelt administration was actively trying to provoke the Japanese into an attack like that on December 7, 1941. The Roosevelt administration may have been trying to provoke such an attack. However, I would be surprised if a novel like this published in 1955 or a similar film that appeared in 1958 would have suggested such.

In the meantime, I plan to change this one sentence. If someone can check the 1955 edition and finds that it starts action before December 7, 1941, I trust they will document that with this note.

This date is of no importance here. The entire film occurs during World War II. I've added a link to the plot of the novel where the time sequence of the background of the story is now clear. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 21:53, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
