editVery good. Can you clarify that Historic England is government sponsored, somehow. Ceoil (talk) 00:22, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
Grammar query
editNot always my strongest suit but the first para. of the lede refers to "a recumbent effigy of a soldier". I wonder if, in fact, it is "an effigy of a recumbent soldier"? Or doesn't it make any difference? Once, I'd have asked Tim. KJP1 (talk) 17:01, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Galleries
editI added a gallery for design elements, with this edit:
-
Northeast flags and carved wreath enclosing the arms of Rochdale
-
Sculpture on top of the memorial
-
Southwest flags and carved wreath enclosing the arms of Rochdale
I was less sure about the following two gallery additions, so am suggesting them here.
-
View from northeast towards the River Roch
-
View from southwest towards Rochdale Post Office
-
View from southeast towards the memorial gardens
-
View from northwest towards Rochdale Town Hall
The northeast view is also towards the police station, but you can't really see that. The southeast view towards the memorial gardens includes College Bank housing estate. Might be worth mentioning that, as those were erected later and are part of the changing surrounds of the memorial, which brings me to these four pictures:
-
Memorial and surrounds in 1951
-
Memorial and surrounds in 1968
-
Memorial and surrounds in 1975
-
Memorial and surround in 1996
It is difficult to write about such changes over time without sources that go into detail on this. If a picture from early on comes up (there is a nice one of the unveiling around, which should in theory be public domain), it might be worth it. Am also not 100% on the licensing and provenance of those images, so holding off on using them in the article. If there is enough associated text, such images can be used outside galleries to illustrate the main body of the article. Carcharoth (talk) 16:20, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
News reports
editThere are two very brief news reports in The Times and The Illustrated London News:
- (1) The Times Monday, Nov 27, 1922; pg. 7; Issue 43199. The unveiling is reported under the heading 'Lord Derby at Rochdale':
In unveiling a town war memorial at Rochdale yesterday, Lord Derby emphasized the necessity for avoiding war. He said: To have any real value, the memorial must be regarded as erected for two purposes - one in memory of those Rochdalians who died for King and country; the other, to teach succeeding generations what war really meant. If this lesson was once learned it was certain people would then avoid any future war by every honourable means.
- (2) The Illustrated London News Saturday, December 02, 1922; pg. 884; Issue [4363]. Photo of memorial after the unveiling, but not a very good one.
Lamp posts
editPutting here, some cropped photos of the lamp posts before and after the restoration described here.
-
Memorial and the lamp posts in 1968 (before they lost their heads)
-
Lamp post in 2013 prior to restoration
-
Restored lamp post in 2017
Not quite sure what to make of that restoration job. Carcharoth (talk) 03:05, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
Defacement
edithttps://www.thesun.co.uk/news/24670349/rochdale-cenotaph-teens-charged-racially-aggravated-criminal-damage/ The memorial was just defaced. Should this go in the History section? SirShaunIV (talk) 19:12, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
- Probably. I've been meaning to track down a reliable source. The Sun is not usable on Wikipedia. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:15, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
