Egypt Airplane Crash

edit

Just an FYI for anyone looking this up. The Richard Osman reported as a person on the May 2016 Egypt Airlines crash is NOT this Richard Osman. 2601:646:C402:A9C0:C84D:3644:B208:EA81 (talk) 19:16, 19 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Came here specifically to check that! Fig (talk) 14:24, 20 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Twitter

edit

Note that Alexander Armstrong (on his twitter feed) claims that the twitter feed quoted here is not really Richard Osman. Someone might want to investigate whether he's joking or not...? [1] --Strange but untrue (talk) 14:44, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

It really is him. I know him personally. He was able to answer a question about Deal or No Deal only he would know. 93.97.113.174 (talk) 16:03, 11 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
The September 2010 comment concerns a link to a fake Richard Osman Twitter that was on the page at that time, not the current link to the real, actual one. Syxx (talk) 03:45, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Persistent vandalism

edit

There's a vandalism issue happening right now, because Osman is encouraging it on his Twitter feed. I'd imagine it'll die down eventually, but, is it possible for someone to protect the article, please? --Cheese453 (talk) 16:50, 16 May 2013 (BST)

Or you could just wait half an hour and it'll stop? 86.182.184.120 (talk) 16:45, 16 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Missing detail

edit

In the section "Personal life", we are told that Richard Osman "has two children from a previous relationship" - previous to what? The previous text refers to Fulham Football Club. Chuckery Towers (talk) 16:48, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

He is divorced. No idea why that has been left out. Somebody seems to think that his football season ticket is more important than 15 years of marriage. Rustygecko (talk) 08:57, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Turn It Up

edit

Re: the youth show Turn It Up on BBC Radio Sussex. In addition to Jane Hill and Jo Whiley - other notable contributors were BBC TV newsreader Clive Myrie, Radio One DJ / magazine editor / recording artist Chris Mellor (aka Chris Coco) and Radio 4 feature maker Mark Coles. Several other notables were also involved but that'll do for now. I keep meaning to make a wiki entry for Turn It Up, maybe one day. (I was a presenter/producer for 9 years).

Radio career

edit

This article mentions Osman's television career, but it could have a sub-heading about his work on radio. Vorbee (talk) 17:42, 1 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

re Jane Hill

edit

Jane Hill was never let anywhere the microphone on Turn It Up. She was what we called a 'nurdler'.... answering the telephones for the quiz and general running about duties. I've still got the running orders and staff lists to prove it.

Jo Wiley was a goth who was a Fields Of Nephilim, Gene Loves Jezebel and Sisters of Mercy fan. She wrote a good script and could read it well... her musical taste was suspect however. One night I happened on R2 and she was playing The New Seekers. I'm not sure how much you would have to pay me to play a New Seekers record, but it would be a lot. 146.90.27.126 (talk) 17:58, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Picture

edit

Why is there no picture of him? 132.185.160.121 (talk) 11:24, 1 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Because of copyright issues. Photographs on Wikipedia either need to have a free licence (see c:Commons:Licensing) or be a non-free image with a fair-use justification, see Wikipedia:Non-free content. Fair-use justifications are rarely if ever accepted for living people. Images derived from British TV shows will not have a valid free license. One solution would be to attend a public event where he is appearing and take a photograph. Verbcatcher (talk) 03:46, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ottoman Empire

edit

Osman is the name of the family who found the Ottoman Empire. I wonder how he got this name? who really his father is?

Well almost. There is more information at Osman. 17:56, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

The Last Devil to Die

edit

This page's description of The Last Devil to Die states it is the last book in the Thursday Murder Club series. However, the linked page does not say it is the last book, only the fourth, and I don't see a source indicating it is to be the last book. (Additionally, I saw a video talk with Osman before the release of The Bullet That Missed which indicated his plans to continue writing about the club, although with a possible break after book 4.) Is there something I am missing? DNOMN8R3.14 (talk) 12:39, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Date and place of birth

edit

FreeBMD here has "OSMAN, Richard Thomas, mmn WRIGHT, Brentwood" for 4th quarter 1970. The postems say:

"08/11/2020: 6' 7" British TV presenter (Pointless, House of Games)" and
"22/10/2023: Comedian, presenter and author born 28/11/1970. Younger brother of Mat Osman, bass guitarist of Suede."

So I'd say he was very likely born on 28th November 1970. But both Billericay and Brentwood had their own registration districts in 1970. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:20, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

p.s. he's also listed as having being born in November 1970 at Companies House (assuming that's the same Richard Thomas Osman). Martinevans123 (talk) 16:47, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
This source seems to confirm. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:06, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. We can't use FreeBMD because WP:PRIMARY SOURCES, and the comments by users there cannot be used because not reliable sources. Companies House is good, and the Who do you think you are? source should be fine, as I think we can assume that he sanctioned the publication of his DOB there. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:02, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
p.s. May as well add both sources as citations. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:03, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I know about FreeBMD, although I'm really not sure why those two postems should be considered "note reliable". I just find it useful as a start point for a search. I've never used it as a source in an article. I've also seen editors decline use of a Companies House record as just two names with a month and year of birth don't guarantee it's the right person. But quite a distinctive name this time. I agree that his participation in Who Do You Think You Are? means he must have sanctioned publication in the magazine. Not sure what to do about the place of birth though. In the TV programme he just says he grew up "about 10 miles from Brighton". Martinevans123 (talk) 08:32, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
What about this source? And this one? Martinevans123 (talk) 08:40, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think that source is fine, given that it's the transcript of an interview (an we can use the cite interview template).
Re the postems - because, as I understand it, there's no verification process for those comments, which can be added by anyone who registers there. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem much different to imdb, which is not a reliable source for most information.
I've not seen any complaints about the use of Companies House (and have used it myself) - and with such an unusual name and occupation listed as TV producer, it seems pretty obvious in this case at least that it's the same person! Laterthanyouthink (talk) 08:50, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
How exciting. I've never used cite interview before. Not sure the Essex Live source is so good, as they manged to get the date of his wedding wrong. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:56, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I see that FreeBMD says: "A free membership is required in order to transcribe data" (although even that statement is unsourced, lol). The article doesn't say anything about editorial oversight/ verification. It does also say "Most transcriptions for FreeBMD are created using specially-written safe software WinBMD and BMDVerify available from the FreeBMD website.[1]", so it seems to be technologically savvy? I've raised a question at Talk:FreeBMD#Editorial oversight. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:59, 25 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
