The controversial edition
editThis edition of Redbrick, with the double page spread "Who's a Wanker" was highly controversial. It really does need a citation, but that should be easily available from the paper's archives. The edition almost ran out of the hands of the students distributing it. My recollection is that this was the first "sell out" edition ever, and I believe it was the first (only?) student newspaper to be referred to the Press Council (should that be the Press Complaints Commission?) which ws succeeded by the Press Complaints Commission
To set this against the backdrop of the times, it was only in July 1967 that homosexual acts between consenting adults (over 21) had been legalised in the UK. the gay Lib worldwide Annual Conference had just been held in the union building in the Easter. Lord Longford had just spoken in Deb Hall against homosexuality and was met by members of the gay society providing many logical arguments to seek to show his bias. Students in general were just at the end of their militant phase, with student protests against Maggie Thatcher. Not long before the scandal of "University Secret Files" had been exposed.
I hope someone with access to the magazine archives will provide a concrete citation for the "Who's a Wanker?" issue Fiddle Faddle 11:47, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
