Proposed merge

edit

Why would this page be merged with Rangitikei District? One is specifically for the local government political entity, the other is a geographical district. Auckland and Auckland Council are separate; so are Wellington and Wellington City Council, Christchurch and Christchurch City Council, Taupo and Taupo District Council, Dunedin and Dunedin City Council. Ideally I'd like the New Zealand local authorities to all have articles for their district councils (and regional councils are lacking too) like the British councils do: Cambridgeshire County Council is separate from Cambridgeshire, South Cambridgeshire District Council, etc. This happens for every single district and council. Not sure why this district council must be merged with its district but the same has not been proposed for other district council articles in New Zealand. Category:City councils in New Zealand. • This is more a question about whether the council is notable enough to warrant its own article separate to the city/district. Not all councils may be notable, and a large proportion of New Zealand territorial authorities redirect to their city/district article and WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS may apply(although Palmerston North City Council has solely existed as a redirect page). Am happy to hear the thoughts from other readers before any decision is made. Ajf773 (talk) 19:00, 19 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
There are several articles weekly about the council as it is the governing authority for the district, and as such arguably one of the most important. The Wanganui Chronicle and the Manawatu Standard report news on it quite often. JaumeBG (talk) 06:12, 20 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think the council is notable to exist as a stand alone article. If any merge had to take place, merging the articles about the council and mayor could be a consideration. Mattlore (talk) 06:53, 20 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
The information contained within this council article would be out of place within the district article. Hence I do not support the merge proposal, and the district council meets notability criteria hands down. I would go as far as saying that district councils in New Zealand have inherent notability.
