Biography or Press Release Forum?
editThis article reads less like the biography and bibliography of a minor British crime writer and more like a platform for the marketing of his books. Either his agent, his publisher or the author himself is editing this article. This must be against wikipedia policy surely? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.210.70.167 (talk) 23:00, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
It does read like a press release with not enough encyclopedic information but more biographical promotional material. I have tried to format the stytle and included some more relevant citations and facts, but it still needs some work so will try and work on it more later as there is a lot of reliable third party information out there. 90.221.172.129 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:14, 28 May 2010 (UTC).
I think the impression of this article as a marketing platform is dead on, after recent disclosures about the reviews of his own work, and that of others, which Mr. Ellory wrote under a pseudonym and has acknowledged. I would not be surprised to find this information, and references to it, removed from the article soon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.20.224.11 (talk) 16:44, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
- Yes indeed, the "awards" he won or was shortlisted for are all meaningless, like saying a writer or artist won some local competition. Having operated a book shop until '09, I must say I never heard of him or was asked for his books. I suggest his entire page be taken down, except for the fact that he praised his own books on Amazon reviews...WOW!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.125.225.193 (talk) 04:58, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Content dispute / BLP issues, September 2012
editHi, I just received a message from R. J. Ellory on my talk page. I have advised filling in the description when making edits; using this talk page and taking the matter to Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard. I pointed out that the problem is that the material in "Personal life" is reliably sourced.
The talk page message reads:
"I do not understand what is happening here. Potentially libellous statements regarding myself and my work are being left on my wikipedia page, and I cannot remove them. This is grossly unfair, unjust and biased. Simply because an article appears in a newspaper does not make it true. Please could you assist me in resolving this issue. Many thank. R J Ellory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.11.171.216 (talk) 20:58, 17 September 2012 (UTC)"
Regards, Esowteric+Talk 21:13, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
I have raised the matter at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard/Archive162. Please add your input to that discussion. Esowteric+Talk 08:36, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Please do give us your input, Mr. Ellory
editHello Mr. Ellory. I'm hoping that you will go to the biographies noticeboard, at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard/Archive162, to give us your side of the story. What precisely do you feel is inaccurate in our article about you? I would hate for the discussion to close without your input. I look forward to hearing your side of the matter, so that the proper course, in accordance with Wikipedia guidelines, can be taken. Thank you. Qworty (talk) 22:36, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Please, please, please respond and state your case at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard/Archive162 and not on my talk page. Thank you, Esowteric+Talk 11:34, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
R. J. Ellory Controversy section still undue and unbalanced?
editRecent edits to controversy (22 September 2012): Hi, could someone please check on whether they think that the Controversy section is undue and unbalanced? Qworty (talk · contribs) (edits diff) seems to think that this has been resolved here and on the subject Roger Ellory (talk · contribs)'s talk page. The edit is inaccurate, as the cited source does not say that R. J. Ellory had been "disinvited" from the Manx festival but that he had pulled out. This edit may perhaps make the section even more unduly weighted. Many thanks, Esowteric+Talk 08:58, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
- The source clearly states that he "has had to pull out," which can only mean that he was forced out. Also, he was replaced with one of the writers he had denounced. All of this is well-sourced, don't you think? Qworty (talk) 10:36, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
- Isn't that possibly OR? He may have "pulled out" because he would have found the occasion difficult to handle at an emotional level? Since Roger Ellory has been banned, I'm just trying to look at this partly from his point of view. Regards, Eric: Esowteric+Talk 10:40, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
- I changed the wording a little in order to take into account your concerns. Let us know what you think. I'm also replying on the BPL noticeboard for this one. Qworty (talk) 10:58, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
- Many thanks, Qworty. Looks good. Have replied at BLP/N. Eric: Esowteric+Talk 11:00, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
Removing of the tag
editIf nobody minds I am going to remove this template "Autobiography|date=September 2012" in a few hours. There's no doubt the subject used to edit the article, but the last time he edited it a few months ago. Now everything is sourced. The tag should be removed because it is BLP violation on its own. 71.202.120.247 (talk) 15:20, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
- It's not a BLP violation to have that tag there, but I agree with its removal. Drmies (talk) 21:01, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Better image
editAn image has been supplied by the subject. File:Roger Jon Ellory.jpg
Obviously, the subject prefers it, but the decision is ultimately the subject to a consensus of editors.
I think it should be used as a replacement, does anyone disagree?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 12:09, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- In the absence of any disagreement, I swapped to use the more recent image.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:58, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
