Pittu or Puttu?
editIs it Pittu or Puttu?? 220.247.246.129 17:43, 9 February 2006 (UTC)
- According to my Tamil and Sinhala dictionaries, it should be "pittu" (indological transcription "piṭṭu").
- Why is it eaten only in Kerala and Sri Lanka when there is a link to "Tamil cuisine"? Is it only availabe in tropical (wet) regions? Or do only those Tamils who live in Sri Lanka eat it?
- And which "highlands" are meant? Those in Kerala or Sri Lanka or both?
- What are "Kerala plantains"?
- Isn't the phrasing "favourite breakfast" somewhat un-encyclopedic? ;-)
- There should be more info on Puttu itself and less describing the side dishes it goes with ... Krankman 01:45, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
When travelling through South India, I was unable to get Puttu anywhere in Tamil Nadu (except for one place), but had it everyday for 2 weeks for breakfast in Kerala. Ah, there's no better way to start the day than with a milk- and honey-soaked puttu. *drool* 212.183.23.1 21:43, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
The word puttu itself is a Tamil word. Puttu was already in use during Cholas. It was also famous in Chera kingdom. Chera kigndom is present day kerala but Cheras were Tamil kings. Kerala was a part of ancient Tamizhagam(Tamil country). Obviosly it is a part of Tamil cuisine. The word Pittu or puttu means portioned. " Appam pittudhal" means "portioning of bread". I am a Tamilian and Tamils too eat puttu. Please read " History of Kerala" "Cheers Kingdom" " History of Malayalam" for better understanding. Jack Roshan (talk) 10:43, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

Puttu is an ancient Tamil Cuisine
editPuttu disappeared from Tamil Nadu when Tamil Nadu was defeated and occupied by Madurai Nayaks 450 years ago. Similarly Onam was celebrated by ancient Tamils but not modern Tamils who instead have adopted many Telugu festivals and customs. There is a legend that Shiva (Chokkanathan)the ancient god of ethnic Tamils took the humble form of a labourer, carried earth to be used for the construction of Madurai temple and ate Pittu. Pittukku Mann Sumantha kathai . Pittu was given as wages in ancient Tamil Nadu. The Tamil form Pittu is still used in Central Kerala while the word Puttu is commonly used in Southern Kerala. Many Malaylees with Dravidian roots may actully descend from ancient Tamils of the Chera dynasty while all the Tamils of presentday Tamilnadu may not descend from ancient Tamils. Better Picture for Puttu
editWikimedia India is currently running a Photography competition called Wiki Loves Food. In this competition, a very good picture of Puttu was contributed. It made it to the Top 10 pictures.
I suggest that we change the Main picture of this article to this picture Yohannvt (talk) 12:24, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
- As of now, removing the previous puttu pic & replacing it with the above one. Yohannvt (talk) 07:52, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
