Rank of Island Size

Isn't Puerto Rico an island in the United States that is also larger than Prince of Wales Island? I mean, Peurto Ricans still get U.S. passports, right? This would make PWI the fourth largest, correct? - SCgatorFan 02:54, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Sometime previously - I did update the text in the article to reflect Hawaii, Kodiak, and Puerto Rico. Prince of Wales still (locally) refers to themselves as the 3rd. largest island in the "United States", which I suppose depends on whether you just count "50 states" or also include the "territories". Population

On would need to go through the cities listed in the article, and add them up their populations for instance citing: List of cities in Alaska by population; there may be a few smaller communities not listed, but they would not greatly affect the overall population. Most of the land area not within the communities is either part of the federal Tongass National Forest or land owned by the State of Alaska. LeheckaG (talk) 12:33, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Also relevant to include would be some figures on the Kaigani Haida population; not as simple a matter as just excerpting "Native American"/"Native Alaskan" stats from census figures from each town, since there might be non-Haida in the figures. As the only Haida homeland in the US, precise figures and largest centres of the KH are more than relevant.Skookum1 (talk) 13:12, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Mining history

name origin

I"m pretty sure this was named after one of the ships of the King George's Sound Company, similar to the Queen Charlotte Islands being named for Queen Charlotte (merchant ship) rather than actually for Queen Charlotte (George III's wife) and Princess Royal Island being named for Princess Royal rather than for one of George III's daughters..... The U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Prince of Wales Island citation says its first use appears in the British-Russian treaty of 1825, but I'm not so sure about that, I suspect it may have been a couple of decades early, as conferred by Captain Colnett or another in the KGSC; I'll see what I can find; at the very least I know it's in British diplomatic notes 1821-25 leading up to the treaty, but in British usage it may be older than the GNIS/USGS is aware of....Skookum1 (talk) 15:26, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
