- Library of Congress's Chronicling America is an excellent source for old American newspapers that can be read freely online. Advanced Search > phrase potato doughnuts > year range 1789 to 1877 and sort results by date (if there's many). The oldest relevant hit finds these letters to the editor in the Chicago Daily Tribune:
