The only topic really covered in this article is mRNA processing. The numerous additional post-transcriptional modifications! There are about 100 different base modifications that take place in RNA. I'm not saying this article has to address all of them, but there should be some significant amount of content describing such.

I agree with Hichris. Chemical modifications are part of post-transcriptional modifications in RNA. All known modifications can be found in the RNA Modification database http://library.med.utah.edu/RNAmods/

I agree with this as well. Since I also thought the first paragraph generally needed some cleaning as well, I re-wrote it to make the article more open to non-mRNA modifications. I will maybe add one (for miRNA and siRNA) later when I have the time. Unfortunately, I don't know much about other modifications so someone else will have to expand on it still. Plans for major revision and possible page move
editThis article is in need of a complete rewrite, and I plan to do some work towards that goal. Before doing so, I would like to offer some thoughts on the article title, and request some community feedback.
The term of art within the field is RNA processing, which is used to describe all of the co-transcriptional and post-transcriptional modifications to the whole constellation of RNA molecules (see List of RNAs) in all organisms and cells. Since the late 1970s, RNA processing has grown to be a very active field of biochemical research that is extremely broad in scope. (Currently, the wiki article on RNA processing is a redirect that links to this page.)
I don't like the current title of the present article, for two reasons--
- The title does not directly mention RNA
- The title uses the word "post-transcriptional" when most of the RNA processing events actually occur during transcription (co-transcriptional)
Secondly, I don't like the content of the present article because it is focused on a very small subset of the RNA processing universe, only pre-mRNA processing in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. It would make much more sense for the article to provide a broad perspective on the overall field, and then link to articles that focus on the individual topics (e.g. transfer RNA processing).
Questions for the community--
- What are your thoughts about moving the present article content to RNA processing?
- Do you agree that this article should provide a broad perspective on the entire field of RNA processing, with links to more detailed articles on individual topics?
