Unio Berestiensis
editSynod of Brest was held 1595 in Lithuania -- This is wrong, in 1595 two orthodox Bishops were recieved by Clemens VIII in Rome in order do find an agreement on the articles of the union that was to follow. The sobory (synods) in Brest were being held a year later in 1596 (see Serhii Plochy The Cossacks and Religion in Early Modern Ukraine pp. 82-4). If you want to call the land Lithuania, just do go on, but since in 1569 the Lithuanian Grand Duchy was united with Poland it seems to be more adequate if you were calling it the Pol.-Lith.-Commonwealth. Anti-semitism
editRemoved the following, in reference to Clement's Cum saepe accidere: "This followed similar Roman laws regarding Jewish merchants in the former Christian Constantinopel, where Jew merchants were not required to solicit who they bought merchandise from." There is no particular connection. The article does not claim Clement invented anti-semitism. --Wetman 01:46, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Historically Jews have been in finance and much of finance is still in their hands, and interest/usury has always been the primary issue to all those who question them. The fact Pope Clement VIII, in the interests of his majority Christian constituents moved to pass legislation to protect his people against such injustice and thievery doesn't deserve such a label, which no doubt in this day and age is nothing less than derogatory. Why should he be labeled an 'anti-semite' when the targets of his legislation were given ample, throughout all of history, opportunity to revise their ways? Labeling Pope Clement VIII an anti-semite almost makes the thieves of his State into victims; when in fact, such laws would have never been passed in any country by any legislature in history had they simply stopped with practice of charging interest/usury/stealing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.103.189.253 (talk) 05:19, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
Conflicting opinions
editFirst of all, I don't think that referring to his famIly as "distinguished" is a neutral point of view. Second of all, the article about his family, the Aldobrandini, refers to them as "undistinguished" until Clement VIII became pope. That's certainly conflicting information.
