Polyandry never existed in upper sections of Nair community

Nair is a group of castes. The upper sections are known as Kiriyathil and Illathu Nairs. Polyandry never existed in these castes. I don't know about other Nair castes.

From Castes and Tribes of Southern India by Edgar Thurston and K. A. Rangachari (1909) - Vol 5: "I have not known an admitted instance of polyandry amongst the Nairs of Malabar(Kerala) at the present day, but there is no doubt that, if it does not exists now (and I think it does here and there), it certainly did not long ago."

In ancient times, entire Kerala was known as Malabar. Illathu Nairs are the genuine Nairs of Travanncore and they never practiced polyandry. Many women of this community were married to Kings and Princes of Royal families and those who were blood related to Travancore Royal Family were known as Thampis and Thankachis. At the time of British rule, Nair title was given to all those who joined army, Menon to all those who worked as accountants etc., because of which new sub-castes were formed in Nair community.

From Scripting Dance in Contemporary India edited by Maratt Mythili Anoop, Varun Gulati: "The South Travacore Dasis neither interdine or intermarry with the dancing girls of Tamil speaking distrcits. The adopt only girls from a particular division of Nairs, Tamil Padam (Tamil Padam Nair), and dance only in Temples. Unlike their sisters outside Travancore, they do not accept private engagements in house on occasion of marriage (emphasis added)." (I don't know if women of Tamil Padam Nair caste practiced polyandry.)

polygamy is not different

polygamy is not a different, but it is superset. so it can be merged into. Since both articles are small, merging will make for improvement of both the subjects. Doorvery far (talk) 14:37, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

disagree. pls explain your superset theory a little bit more specifically. Articles being small can not be a criteria for merging. For starters, you can place a merge request and attract more editors to chime in. --L I C 15:09, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Quote from Polygamy lead section: "Historically, polygamy has been practiced as polygyny (one man having more than one wife), or as polyandry (one woman having more than one husband), or, less commonly as group marriage (husbands having many wives and those wives having many husbands)".
