Talk:Politics of upstate New York

I moved the "Politics" section of the Upstate New york article here, for two reasons:

1. As the length of the Upstate NY article has been criticiized, I am spinning off lengthy sections into their own articles.

2. This section seemed to be the focus of "POV" objections to the upstate New York article as a whole.

I mean to make no criticism of the content of this section (now article). Personally, I have had no objection to the lengthy and sometimes contentious nature of the Upstate article, as I think it better reflects the nature and culture of the people that way, as un-Wiki as that may be.

But under the threat of deletion, I seek to respond to the critics.

NY-23

Farine, I agree with most of your edits here; thank you.

I do think that the recent NY-23 congressional election merits a mention, especially as it attracted national attention and the result ran counter to what is identified as a trend in a later paragraph.

geographic gaffes

Also, in my view some version of the paragraph about geographic gaffes by politicians is notable and merited. I would say here (but need citations to put it back into the article) that many Upstaters perceive Downstaters to be ignorant of their region, and are sensitive to the periodic displays of such ignorance by statewide officeholders or political candidates. Thus, a demand for familiarity with the region in their leaders is a basic non-partisan aspect of the politics of Upstate New Yorkers, and worthy of inclusion in the article. I'll work on this too. Which def is used for this article? How can statistics be meaningful without knowing what is being referred to as Upstate NY? --JimWae (talk) 06:08, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
