Justified emendation or not

edit

The original? spelling was restored by an anonymous editor who quotes: "List of the specimens of hemipterous insects in the collection of the British Museum, by William Sweetland Dallas, is the original description of the family where the correct spelling can be referenced.[1]" I have restored it to the older version until someone confirms the situation with suitable recent sources? @Dyanega: Shyamal (talk) 04:11, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • I am an ICZN Commissioner, so I should point his out to our anonymous editor; it does not matter, under the Code, whether subsequent spelling changes were justified or not, what matters is what spelling is in common usage (emphasis mine):

ICZN Article 29.5. Maintenance of current spellings. If a spelling of a family-group name was not formed in accordance with Article 29.3 but is in prevailing usage, that spelling is to be maintained, whether or not it is the original spelling and whether or not its derivation from the name of the type genus is in accordance with the grammatical procedures in Articles 29.3.1 and 29.3.2.
