half guinea
editMight be asinine, but I'm American... why would she get half a guinea per week rather than a guinea per two weeks or a pound in pence every week? Many thanks, Potatoswatter 19:19, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
A guinea was a common sum - a half a guinea may well have been, too. (I am sure that I recall some things being priced at 10 shillings and sixpence - which is half a guinea). -- Beardo 21:15, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
- There is a link to the history of the guinea in the article, where it indicates that there was a half-guinea coin. I do not know about the US but over here people were and continue to be paid either weekly or monthly. Esthameian 23:06, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
She became 108 years old?! - —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.145.160.55 (talk • contribs) 16:25, 3 April 2007
That's what they say.
- But this was before compulsory registration of births.Esthameian 23:06, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
PS At one point it referred to Hassel - I changed to Hessel but that is only supposition on my part. -- Beardo 21:15, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
Note of caution - Ms Hessel herswlf was the source of many of the stories.Esthameian 23:06, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Jack-a-Roe
editI've often heard it said that a folk song, perfomed by the Grateful Dead, was about Phoebe Hessel. Jack-a-Roe is very similar to her story and I'll include a link here to the lyrics: [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mcreedy (talk • contribs) 08:02, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
