Gatling gun is not a pepperbox
editWhile a Gatling gun is a multi-barrel firearms, it has a feed mechanism and magazine, unlike the pepperbox. Established firearms authorities, such as W.H.B. Smith ("Small Arms of the World"), do not class the Gatling gun as a pepperbox. Once the barrels are empty, a pepperbox must be manually reloaded. The Gatling gun is a completely different mechanism. "1763" pepperbox
editThe number on this pistol is not the date, but the serial number. Here's an identical pistol bearing the stamp "1808" and another with "816." Besides being caplock (not invented until the early 19th century), these weapons were mass-produced, rather than handmade as you would expect an 18th century weapon to be. Given that multibarrel pistols were exclusively for the wealthy in the 1700s, this pepperbox should be ornately decorated, rather than have a utilitarian (probably military) appearance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osama57 (talk • contribs) 19:57, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Definition?
editAre non-rotating Derringers Pepperboxes? Or is (as I believe to be the case) rotation of a group of barrels an essential condition for something to be correctly termed a pepperbox? Andy Dingley (talk) 14:17, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- This source seems to say that: [1], but it stop short of giving an explicit definition. Rezin (talk) 19:03, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
- OTOH, the Sharps Pepperbox, which is nominally a pepperbox, does not have rotating barrels.[2] Rezin (talk) 19:11, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Standard Manufacturing S333 Volleyfire
editLooks like a new pepperbox may be entering the market. Since it has not been released yet, this should not be added to the article. But in case I forget to, someone should check up on this every 6 months to monitor its progress. If and when it does get released, then it can be added to the article. (If they offer it in .32 H&R Magnum, I'd be interested!) http://www.stdgun.com/s333/ Phantom in ca (talk) 01:10, 23 July 2017 (UTC)
Contradiction of Definition
edit"The pepperbox should not be confused with a volley gun; the difference is that a volleygun fires all the barrels simultaneously while the pepperbox is a repeater."
This line contradicts the definition of volley gun in that article which states "A volley gun is a gun with several barrels for firing a number of shots, either simultaneously or in succession." Sol Pacificus (talk) 05:37, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
-- I came to Talk to point out the same! I know nothing about guns but in the spirit of "So Fix It" I suggest that a the definition of a Volley Gun has been, in practice somewhat flexible, with people using it for both simultaneous and successive fire, but that since a "volley" of shots is normally spoken of a lot of shots starting at the same moment and the majority/all? of the guns actually described in the Volley Gun article are for simultaneous firing, we settle on that as our Wikipedian definition of a volley gun (bearing in mind the description currently in the opening paragraph which defines one as not having the automatic firing or reloading facilities of a machine gun)

Samuel Colt
edit'For example, Samuel Colt owned a three-barrel pepperbox matchlock musket from British India,[1] and an eight-barrel pepperbox shotgun was designed in 1967 but never went into production.'
This is confusing. Did he somehow own the shotgun when it was designed in the century after he died? Jokem (talk) 23:12, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
Examples of pepperboxes
editThis link leads to a foreign language page. It will translate to something having nothing to do with pepperboxes that I can see. Looks like a Dutch page having to do with electronic media. Jokem (talk) 23:12, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
