Fair use rationale for Image:On Stranger Tides.jpg

edit

Image:On Stranger Tides.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Tim Powers as a movie extra

edit

It is not true that Powers attached the condition that he be used as an extra in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. He said so in an email to a Tim Powers email list. This is the same list where someone posted -- as a joke -- that he had. Since that email flew around the Internet and fueled all these claims, perhaps an email from Powers himself saying: "I haven't spoken to anybody at Disney, and the only correspondence about the contract has been through my agent. I haven't had any contact with the script writers, and I did _not_ specify any conditions" can serve as a citation. A website claiming that there were such conditions (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=25807) is citing a messageboard (http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=200422) which is merely reposting the joke email.

Useful information regarding Powers and the book

edit

I posted this information in this talk page — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.90.114.161 (talk) 21:47, 1 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Though it's mainly concerning the Pirates of the Caribbean film, I do believe that information from this interview with Tim Powers could be useful here(and maybe Tim Powers' page)...especially with some of the info that contradicts the current info. Examples of good info being:

  • A huge bit of Powers' inspiration for writing On Stranger Tides, as a "behind the scenes" sort of thing.
  • Disney optioning Powers' novel prior to the release of the second movie.
  • Powers thought that the book was used for the previous films, particularly the first and second film(listen to the interview to get the idea).
  • Powers belief that the film wouldn't follow his book 100% except for Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth. His opinion on book adaptions from a famous line by James Cain could also be used.
  • The fact that Powers and his wife went on set during the making of the film, as well as giving Johnny Depp a copy of the book. (this one I think may only be appropriate for Powers' article)

This is merely a suggestion that I sincerely hope you'll follow. While it is appropriate to use news articles and such, it'd be better getting the info from the author himself. 75.89.201.135 (talk) 10:40, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Anyone care to reply to this idea? 75.89.201.135 (talk) 22:16, 17 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Lawsuits

edit

The article states, "Rossio mentioned how Disney was hit with at least six plagiarism lawsuits for the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie for supposedly stealing elements of the Monkey Island video game and stuff from the On Stranger Tides novel, despite there being a ride at Disneyland and also a first draft screenplay by other writers."

But the cited source by Rossio says, "For the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Disney was hit with no less than six plagiarism suits. All writers claiming we stole their work. (Not to mention we supposedly lifted elements of the video game Monkey Island, also stuff from the novel On Stranger Tides. Add that there was a first draft screenplay by other writers, and also a ride at Disneyland. With all that, why, the script practically wrote itself!)"

Rossio is clearly saying that the Disney was hit by six lawsuits *and* people said ("not to mention") they ripped off Monkey Island and On Stranger Tides. Not that they were sued over Monkey Island and On Stranger Tides. -- 65.32.168.88 (talk) 19:01, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
