Can anyone who is from here or is familiar with the city tell me how "Novato" is pronounced? Is it no-VA-to or no-va-TO? Which syllable is stressed? Stlom 01:34, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- I have a friend from there who pronounces it no-VAH-to.--FreeKresge 00:45, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks Stlom
It's Nuh-vah-toe. It's supposed to come out sorta quick, but theres a little bit of emphasis on the 'vah'. Lettuceclock 09:48, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- Right - nuh-VAH-toh (or nuh-VAH-doh). Rlitwin 14:05, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- I grew up here back in the 60's-70's (and still live in Marin). While nuh-VAH-toh would technically describe the way most English speaking folks say it, I would add that the last syllable is definitely slurred/softened to be more of a "doh" sound, as Rlitwin mentions above (as opposed to saying it with a strong "T" as people of native Spanish-speaking backgrounds might tend to pronounce it). What exactly does being a "sister city" to Shepparton (Australia) mean? History, size? ... I do admit Marin has painted fiberglass cows in places, but this is not the point. --Earthsprite 10:53, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
This article (Novato, California) lists four ranchos that were very important to the history of Northern California: Rancho San Jose, Corte Madera de Novato, Rancho Olompali, and Rancho Nicasio. It is very notable that one, Rancho Olompali was awarded to a Miwok chief (as per the article and my dim recollection of California history). It is probably one of the few, if not the only, to be awarded to a native.
