Races to include?
editTigerboy1966 and others: Any other suggestions for races to include? I have the full set of English classics (of course) & the American Triple Crown plus Kentucky Oaks, but only one from each of Germany & Australia, two from each of Ireland & France and three from Japan. Don't know which race would be suitable for South Africa. Hesitate to include the Queen's Plate since restricted to Canadian-breds. As for older horse races, I took the top 13 from the IFHA list and then took the top race or two from other major countries, plus the top ranked races for fillies/mares and sprinters. Wasn't sure if I should include the Eclipse (#14), Sussex (#15), Queen Anne (#16) and Prix Ganay (#20). Should I include the Ascot Gold Cup, which is certainly prestigious enough to go in the Other section. Thoughts welcome! Jlvsclrk (talk) 16:07, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
- Would certainly include the Eclipse, Sussex & Ascot GC, they are very much championship races and of great historical signifiance in this country. Queen Anne, not sure - this has only been a G1 in comparatively recent times and when I first started following racing it was "only" a G3 race, so it wouldn't be right in my opinion to include it as a top-class championship-type race. Of course, that's all subjective - there's been a lot of "inflation" of G1 status in Europe in the last few years particularly with regard to fillies' races so it might be best for us to come to some sort of decision here. Tigerboy1966 is from pretty much the same era as myself so hopefully would concur that some British & Irish G1s are are more worthy of inclusion than others. --Bcp67 (talk) 10:19, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
- Sounds great to me! I'll add in the three you mention and give it a rest. The list is a bit Eurocentric but that's got everything to do with so many American Grade Is being diluted by the elite horses shipping to miss each other until the Breeders' Cup. Jlvsclrk (talk) 17:20, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
- The problems with this kind of list is that if you include x, why not y. For instance if you have the Arima Kinen, why not the Tenno Sho, Yasuda KInen and the Takarazuka Kinen. I don't think we will get a definitive list anytime soon but it would be worth putting in some more Japanese races as they are very strict about grading and the G1 races are proper G1s by any standards. Mind you most of their best horses over there are from the Sunday Silence line so it might not be that relevant. Tigerboy1966 18:36, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks! Japan Cup is #8 on the Longines list and Arima Kinen is #11 so that's why they are already in. Takarazuka Kinen comes next at #22 so I'll include it (nice to see Last Tycoon's line popping up again with Satono Crown). Tenno Sho (Autumn) is #28 so kind of on the borderline. The Tenno Sho (Spring) & Yasuda Kinen are a fair bit farther down so I'll leave out. Jlvsclrk (talk) 19:18, 26 June 2017 (UTC) Jlvsclrk (talk) 19:19, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
