Education - top 20 state schools list

I've removed North Cestrian as it's been put at no.21 in a top 20 list, it's an independent not a state school, and even if it was it wouldn't be next on the list (it looks like Urmston Grammar School would be 21st). The source I found (on the Guardian website) is divided into sections and includes independent schools, if a better source is found this can be replaced (or when tables for 2007 can be found). --Snigbrook (talk) 19:38, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

I restored the original removal. Now that I've heard the explanation, removal of the entry seems perfectly all right and justified to me.  DDStretch  (talk) 22:54, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

The formatting of section 3 (Important towns, etc)

Their is an inconsistancy with the way that the sizes of the towns are rated. Some towns like Warrington have the population of surrounding civil parishes (eg Burtonwood, Lymm, etc..) included while others like Northwich where nearly two thirds of the population live in surrounding parishes have them excluded! Can Ddstretch explain!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.144.181.169 (talk) 23:42, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

The formatting of this section has been set up in a way which makes my display mangle the entire section: the images over-write the third column of the text. I'm on an 1024 x 768 sized display, which i don't think is yet too old fashioned to ignore, and so I'm going to alter the section to allow people with displays like mine view the information better.  DDStretch  (talk) 13:35, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Ok. I've tried a number of solutions (only in preview), and can't get them to work excatkly right yet, but I do still think the section needs some attention. I'll try again later.  DDStretch  (talk) 14:01, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Airline Destinations

Why is it necessary to have the list of airlines and destinations served from North West Airports in this article, when a link to the Wikipedia page of each airport article is already provided, where this information can be easily found? The information on this page is now significantly out of date, and I can't see any benefit to updating this separate list each time an airline / destination change is made on the respective airport pages, so I propose deletion of these lists. Any thoughts? Thanks. SempreVolando (talk) 11:11, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

With no comments forthcoming from other users and the information becoming more and more out of date by the day I have removed this section. SempreVolando (talk) 15:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Trafford Colleges

According to the Wikipedia article for Trafford College, The North and South Trafford Colleges merged in 2007. I have merged the two entries into a single item. – eJames (talk)20:44, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Accents

In this page, there is a lot of focus on the Scouse accent, where as the Manc accent is generalised as 'Lancashire'. The Mancunian accent is just as identifiable as the Scouse accent and sounds nothing like a typical 'Lancashire' accent. Does nobody think this should be encorporated into this page?

Apologies if I have editted this wrong I am no Wiki expert. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Salfordsredarmy (talkcontribs) 15:06, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

How is the vast majority of this article even relevent?

The North West is politically little more than a statistical region invented by central government. Culturally & historically, it's largely artificial and most people don't identify with it. So why have we got everything from schools to accents on here? Schools, for example, are mostly a local thing, most of which have some relationship with their local council. Surely, schools should be featured in the local authority pages. Accents also. The only things that should be on this page are North West relevent things, such as the Manchester-based media, Euro-constituencies etc. itsenäisyyspäivä —Preceding undated comment added 14:53, 14 April 2011 (UTC).

It's been an official region for many decades. It was an economic planning region (not just a statistical region) until Mrs Thatcher abolished those. You say "most people don't identify with it" but that is your opinion merely. I lived in Manchester for many years and I don't agree with you. It was also a television region for a long time, notably with Granada TV which always had a very strong regional identity. That has gone now, but some of its cultural influence remains. -- Alarics (talk) 15:08, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Wow - economic planning region. How many people do you think even knew that they existed, yet alone based their identities on them?

Regardless, my main point still stands. Schools are not a 'North West' thing. They're an England thing and a local authority thing.

What next? Mental Health institutions in the Northern Hemisphere? itsenäisyyspäivä —Preceding undated comment added 01:00, 10 May 2011 (UTC).

I agree with Alarics - as a former inhabitant of Cheshire, I identified myself as being from North West England - it's most certainly more than an administrative nicety. cheers Geopersona (talk) 19:02, 12 January 2012 (UTC)
As a lifelong resident of the North West, I have to agree. There is an extremely strong regional identity in the region (certainly as strong as the Yorkshire and North East regional identities). Indeed, many residents identify more with the North West than they do with England as a whole. Skinsmoke (talk) 10:57, 20 May 2012 (UTC)
I wouldnt say it was as strong as the Yorkshire identity but there is a very strong identification with the 'Northern' identity shared with the North and North East combined with a local identity that revolves around the western coast. WatcherZero (talk) 20:26, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Cities and towns.

What is this all about? Within Greater Manchester, you have Manchester, way up at the top, and then Salford way down. The City of Salford has a population of about 218,000. Other component parts of what is the city are listed separately. An example is Walkden. As usual, on here, when it comes to the UK in particular, you are not comparing like with like. Did not break Manchester up, so why Salford? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.149.180.163 (talk) 17:12, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Metropolitan areas

Although it may not be possible to discern complete consensus amongst sources for population figures for agglomerated urban (+ wider) areas (eg 'Manchester metropolitan area', 'Manchester - Liverpool megalopolis' etc.), I think it is imperative that the figures given are internally consistent within each article, and also preferentially within connected/related Wikipedia articles. This is why in a recent edit of mine to this article, I changed what was a precise figure for the 'Manchester - Liverpool megalopolis' into a more general one - otherwise it would have contradicted the sum of the two preceeding component populations (i.e. 'Manchester metropolitan area' and 'Liverpool/Birkenhead metropolitan area' respectively). However it might be that it should have been the component population figures which were amended.....? PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 20:09, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

migration

Hi! very new to writing wikipedia articles but very able and willing to help. The following is a map showing out migration from the North West that was made by me

Add caption here

if it is of any use to anyone please use it! I will be glad to write a small section on emigration in the North West but am not yet sure if it would be suitable or wanted, please contact me if you think it is Rob3rtlaw (talk) 16:52, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Don't know what the figures show, but the map shows the North East not the North West. Wikipedia is based on published reliable sources, not on original research. If the map is corrected, and the sources are made clear, then it might be possible to consider using it. Thanks for contributing! Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:02, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Greater Manchester Combined Authority

The article states that with the establishment of the GMCA, the existing metropolitan boroughs are "once again second tier authorities". I don't think that this is correct under the Local Government Acts. Metropolitan boroughs are still unitaries - the GMCA is not considered as a de facto met county and the individual met boroughs retain legal responsibility for all local authority services in their area.Edhammond2 (talk) 12:20, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

infographic?

Hi, I’m Andrew Clark and I work at the Office for National Statistics in the UK.

We publish lots of infographics and I wonder if this one on North West of England (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Regional_Profile_of_the_North_West.png) would be of interest for North_West_England

FYI, the full gallery, updated weekly, is here <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Content_created_by_the_Office_for_National_Statistics>

All the best

Transport - Air - Cheshire

Hawarden Airport is not in Cheshire - it's in Flintshire - so I suggest this entry should be removed for accuracy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clogs (talkcontribs) 14:55, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Official region name is wrong - should be "North West"

There is currently a discussion at Talk:Regions of England regarding the official name of the region, as I believe that it is actually "North West", not "North West England". The thread is Talk:Regions of England § Some of the region article titles are wrong.. Thank you. Theknightwho (talk) 04:52, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
