Brown ring formulas: Will ferrous iron really reduce sulphuric acid to hydrogen? Will nitric acid easily disproportinate in aqueous solutions? Shouldn't the formulas rather be written as a reaction between nitric acid and ferrous iron? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.227.15.253 (talk) 12:39, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
The explanation to the ring test ist wrong. NO is not oxidized to NO+, but reduced to NO-. The correct product is [Fe(III) (H2O)5 (NO-)]2+ as stated in newer research. Example for a source: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ic1023357.37.120.23.210 (talk) 16:34, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
