Battle in 917?

edit

Was "Opposing the invasion by the Northmen during the next several years, Niall's forces fought a large battle against a group of Northmen in the summer of 917," the battle of Confey? --AW 16:40, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Annals of Ulster say Niall's camp in 917 was by "Topar Glethrach in Mag Feimin", Mag Feimin being somewhere in Co. Tipperary, perhaps near Clonmel. The Four Masters say that the Leinster army was defeated by Sihtric at "the battle of Ceannfuait" or of "Ceann-Fuaid". The New History of Ireland chronology glosses Cenn Fuait as being "Glynn, near St Mullins, Co. Wexford." So, unless my grasp of Irish geography is even worse than I think it is, probably not. Hmm. Some other sites said Ceannfuiat was Confey, and they seem like cognates --AW 18:11, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Date of death

edit

Other articles here claims the date of his death, i.e. the 919 battle of Dubling, being September 14th 919. Annals of Ulster, onlinetranslation at CELT, reads "...on the fourth feria, the eighteenth of the Kalends of October 14 Sept..." I'm confused :-) Finnrind 18:32, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The "eighteenth of the Kalends of October" is eighteen days before the Calends (beginning) of October i.e. 14 September. Scolaire (talk) 21:57, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
