Dubious
editUtah territory never claimed land in California.
Centerville was county seat before Alturas. Downstrike (talk) 06:56, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
It may be tempting cite from a source such the local Chamber of Commerce for information about a city or county, but in this case at least, the Alturas Chamber of Commerce web site's History page is questionable. While some content seems to be original work dating to 1992, some has been added so recently that Google hasn't collected it into their search engine yet, and it's a collection of snippets of information plagiarized from a variety of uncredited sources. This came to my attention when I recognized some of my own work on their page.
Their original work contains contradictions of scholarly works, without citing a source.
Googling a selection of phrases that should be unique to their page shows that these phrases occurred earlier on other web sites:
- "The village was knows as Kosealekte"
- "Valley on Top of a Mountain"
- "the brothers had settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon"
This is not to say that the Alturas Chamber of Commerce web site is of no use to us. However, having found information on it, we would be wise to google the phrase we want to cite, in order to find the original source, and determine whether it is reliable. Source needs ID
editThere are seven cites to a source noted as Kyle, but nothing that identifies the original author, work, publisher and date. A Lt. Kyle was documented as being involved in the Modoc War, but it is unclear if this material is based on a journal of his. Other academic sources should be used on such a controversial war.Parkwells (talk) 19:35, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
- Perhaps someone tried to do something about this since then, because the name of Hoover's and Kyle's publication is present in the References section. However, each of the inline citations is followed by numbers outside the citation in a format I don't recognize.
- Should I guess that these are meant to be page numbers? If so, page numbers belong in a field within the citation. Yes; as far as I know, that means that references to different pages need to be separate citations. Downstrike (talk) 11:16, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Modoc County Seal
editThe unofficial county seal is the mule deer. There is a much less known official county seal of a bear in the foreground with 3 pine trees and mountains in purple behind them. This can easily be verified by contacting the Clerk to the Board of Supervisors, 204 Sth Court Street, Alturas, CA 96101. If you wish to verify by phone, call (530)233-6201. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.42.185.129 (talk) 22:43, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Empty Tables Suggestion
editWhat is the point of all these empty tables, such as for Crime and Demographics? They seem like an eyesore, so I suggest they be removed until someone actually has data to populate them. Downstrike (talk) 11:02, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Geographically Incorrect Photo
editThere is a photo listed of "the main camp remains of the historic Tule Lake Relocation Center". The photo itself is not of the Tule Lake relocation center (Newell, Modoc County, California). It's of the Camp Tulelake, which housed German prisoners of war and is located in SISKIYOU county at the eastern edge of Sheepy Ridge. I am going to remove this photo. Someone can add a photo that is of the actual Japanese Internment camp in Modoc County if they want to. Additionally, Captain Jack's Stronghold, Lava Beds National Monument, is in SISKIYOU county, so that photo is being removed, too. I know this is near the border of Modoc County, but people really need to consult maps if they're unsure of borders. 68.186.96.137 (talk) 02:46, 3 August 2017 (UTC)

Meaningless information
edit1. "The population density was 2 people per square mile (1/km2). There were 4,807 housing units at an average density of 1 per square mile (0/km2)."
The conversions are not accurate and 0/km2 is meaningless.
2. Most of the hidden tables have numbers but it's not clear what the numbers mean so the information is meaningless.
3. The data on crime has no date which is meaningless.
