I have made seven edits to this page, but mostly reverting vandalism, and none since 2012. I think I'm sufficiently removed from this article to review it. I'll make comments in the next few days. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:58, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Lead
There are commas after (born June 9, 1980) and "infielder" in the first sentence that should not be thereI think we need a pronunciation guide for "Fontenot".Commonly used at second base, shortstop, or third base during his career, Fontenot won a World Series with the Giants in 2010.
These two clauses are important for the lead, but they're not related to each other and shouldn't be in the same sentence.Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers
I appreciate that you didn't try to use "LSU" without introducing the abbreviation first, but this feels awkward. With LSU, I usually say something likeattended Louisiana State University (LSU) and played college baseball for the LSU Tigers.
I think that flows better.
- High school career
His name is given as "Michael Eugene Fontenot Jr" in the body, but no Jr. is included in the lead. Also remember MOS:JR, no comma before "Jr." or "Sr."This paragraph is a bit overloaded and should be split in two, preferably after his father and before high school.- "Runs batted in" is plural, so the abbreviation is "RBIs". Please fix throughout. Keep it as "RBI" if singular.
- You're right that it's plural, but it's the first word (runs) that's plural, not the last word. I phrase it like RBI because RBIs seems to mean "run batted ins." Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 12:04, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Please see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Baseball/Archive_5#RBIs for a cogent explanation on this. "RBI" is "run batted in", singular, and "RBIs" is "runs batted in", plural. Much like how the plural for attorney general is "attorneys general", not "attorney generals". – Muboshgu (talk) 20:34, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I agree with that - BUT I'm certainly not going to go against official Wikipedia style. Changing now. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:08, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Fontenot said of LSU, "It is by far the best baseball program in the nation."
This quote adds very little (of course he'll praise LSU) and is cited to his LSUsports.net sports bio, which doesn't suggest importance. Please remove.
- College career
The lead links to LSU Tigers baseball, but the body doesn't. Add a link.Fontenot was a part of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional all-tournament team.
I understand what this means, but many won't. There needs to be more context on LSU making the tournament.- I also don't like how much of this section is sourced to that LSUsports.net bio. Are there any citations from The Times-Picayune or the Baton Rouge Advocate?
- There probably were back in the day, but I'm not finding them right now. Other than the quote about LSU being the best baseball program in the nation (which I took out), the LSU cite is used to support objective facts. It should be an appropriate reference. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 12:10, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Do you have access to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library? I bet they are available there. Definitely worth your while to acquire. If not, this isn't going to prevent me from passing it. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:51, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I do not. Otherwise, I would be happy to check. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:07, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
- Apply at WP:LIBRARY. Worth your effort, not relating to this nom.. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:02, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

The college awards would be better in prose than list format. Also keep in mind that periodicals need to be italicized.
- Baltimore Orioles
home-run hitter Sammy Sosa
change to "outfielder Sammy Sosa"
- Chicago Cubs
With Chicago, Fontenot was assigned the number 27.
Is this important? Everybody wears a number. Unless there is a significance to the number for him that the news media reported on, lets take this out. Same with the number 17 later in the section."Major League debut" should be all lower case- "did not even invite", take out the "even", it's sufficient. Speaking of spring training, link it, and was he invited to spring training in a previous year?
- Not sure that he was or not, but it's notable that he was not invited in 2007, since he had spent the entire previous season at the highest level of the minor leagues and would play most of 2007 in the majors. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 12:50, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Agreed that it is notable that he was not invited in 2007. I think this point is probably resolved – Muboshgu (talk) 20:52, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

In 2008, Fontenot was a fan favorite due to his strong hitting as a bench player.[30]
This is based on the paragraphFontenot emerged as a cult hero in Chicago after breaking out in 2008 as a key bench player. He hit .305 with nine home runs, 40 runs batted in, and a staggering .909 OPS in only 243 at bats. It looked like Mighty Mouse had game!
I'm skeptical of Bleacher Report from around 2009 (they've gotten better recently), and I don't feel comfortable calling him a "fan favorite" based solely on this article.- Fine with taking it out. He's never been a particular favorite of mine. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 12:52, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Also take out the "fan favorite" from the lead then. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:32, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Grand slam (baseball) should be linked
- San Francisco Giants
in time to keep the Giants from having to pay him $787,000 for the coming year.[62]
I understand that his contract was not yet fully guaranteed when he was released, and the reference mentions that, and I think that context needs to be added here.- You changed the sentence to
On March 30, Fontenot was released, just before his $787,000 salary for the coming year would have become fully guaranteed.[63]
, but I don't think this is accurate. The source saysThe move saves the Giants about $787,000
, so it would imply that his salary was more than that, and the 787K is the money they didn't have to pay by cutting him before the salary became guaranteed. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:00, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- You changed the sentence to
- Further, is there any other information on his salaries? Did he and his teams agree to contracts or go to arbitration?
- Please add some more salary info. There's this story about beating out Adam Jones and Micah Owings for the "last arbitration spot" in 2010, which is not how arbitration works today. He apparently earned $1 million for 2010. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:00, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- Yes. I already added that after your initial comment (see article). Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:03, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

.289 batting average/.343 on-base percentage/.340 on-base plus slugging percentage
Replace the slashes with commas.
- Tampa Bay Rays
He was again primarily used as a second baseman (82 games), also making seven appearances at third base. In 113 games...
This reads as 82 + 7 = 113, which doesn't add up. Please clarify.
- Career statistics
- This is fine.
- Personal life
- This section is missing. What do we know about his personal life? Is he married? Does he have kids? Dogs? Cats? Does he still live in Louisiana? Has he been up to anything since 2014?
- Not missing; just nothing to put there. Fontenot seems to have dropped off the radar since his career ended. Couldn't find anything for this section. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 11:56, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Fair enough re: nothing new since he retired, but there is information on his personal life. I Googled "Mike Fontenot wife" and found that he married Ashley Fife, who he was introduced to by Ryan Theriot, and they have at least one child. That needs to be added. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:22, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing that when I was researching Fontenot. I googled "Mike Fontenot wife" too and found several webpages mentioning her, but here's the problem. None of them seem to be reliable sources. While I don't doubt that he is married (and apparently has at least one child), I'm not sure there's a source out there we can cite to. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 03:16, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

That is my review, though I reserve the right to make other callouts in the future. I will now place this nom on hold. Please let me know if you have any questions. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:03, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- Alrighty, I just looked through and I think you've covered all of my points. I did another deep dive to see info about his wife and children and there isn't much else, so this is a pass. – Muboshgu (talk) 23:43, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
