Moving this page

edit

This came up on the AfD... Apparently, the Tamil 'dh' and 'th' are written the same way, so in English this name could be written as either Mathan or Madhan (or even Madan, which is the name the article currently leads with and the one used in the site linked at the bottom.) Of these three, it's plain that "Mathan" is the worst choice... Unlike the other two, it turns up almost no Google results related to him no matter what you do with it, which was part of the reason he was put up for AfD in the first place. Madan, incidently, can refer to several different things, and there's already a disambig page there (I already added this article to it.) So. Should this article be moved to Madhan, to Madan (writer), or should it stay here? --Aquillion 01:41, 10 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes, 'Mathan' is not the best way to write the name in English, 'Madan' or 'Madhan' would be okay. As Madan is already a dab page, and as it can refer to different things I rename (move) this page from 'Mathan' to 'Madhan'. -śrīni 06:50, 15 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

@Wikieditorchoice:, why are you restoring this article? The contents are identical to Madhan (actor). Argento Surfer (talk) 14:38, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Wikieditorchoice and Argento Surfer: This is quite a mess. Madhan (actor) is a recently created page. The edit history of this page is much longer and has been about the actor for most of its existence. The edit history should not be overwritten by simply converting this page into a disambiguation. If appropriate, a history merge can be requested. But in principle, this may be a WP:TWODAB situation in that disambiguation be accomplished by adding a hatnote linking to Madhan (writer) on the actor's page at Madhan. Or if the two are relatively equal in notability, then it may be appropriate to properly move the actor's page to Madhan (actor) and have a disambiguation page at Madhan. olderwiser 15:14, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Madhan (writer) is also a recent creation by Wikieditorchoice. Argento Surfer (talk) 15:29, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Bkonrad: It is not actually the case that this page [...] has been about the actor for most of its existence - I have checked the edit history pretty thoroughly and this has been an article about the writer and cartoonist Madhan since 2005 up until 22 August this year. That's when Wikieditorchoice overwrote the contents with text about the actor, and then cut and pasted the previous contents of the article into a new article, Madhan (writer). This has been obfuscated by the activities of two other editors who are also named in the SPI linked below. As you say, Madhan (actor) is recently created, and from what I can see, there has been no article about the actor until two or three days ago. I think this is a case of a person creating an article (probably an autobio) and then trying to get all the uses of the name to refer to that article, for marketing purposes. It's been done before to other articles. :-( As a side note, Wikieditorchoice has already been blocked for disruption. --bonadea contributions talk 09:19, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

he is called as madan or mathan not madhan— Preceding unsigned comment added by Chennaiboys (talkcontribs) 14:31, August 23, 2017 (UTC)

@Bkonrad: - yep, quite a mess, made even more so by the several new accounts creating pages about the actor and the writer and asking other editors to move them around - it looks like a marketing effort for the actor. Madan (writer) was created by one of these new editors as a copy of an older version of this page, but that was apparently also a copyvio from Goodreads. I suspect that the Goodreads text may have been copied from Wikipedia, given that this is an old article, but then again, it was not written like an encyclopedia article so I don't know what is the appropriate thing to do at this point. Except open a SPI, perhaps. --bonadea contributions talk 14:38, 23 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

What to do now?

edit

What would be the best way to proceed with this? I am not sure whether Madhan (actor) is in fact about a notable subject, I doubt it would survive an AfD, but I could of course be wrong about that. If it is kept, the dab page makes sense, but what about the pre-August 22 page history of Madhan? That needs to be at Madhan (writer). I thought it would be possible to merge part of the page history, but apparently that's not an option. On the other hand, if the article about the actor should be deleted, should we just restore this article to the original version of the page about the writer? Madhan (writer) has been cleaned up, mostly by Simplexity22, and what about that editing history? Not to mention the copyvio issue, mentioned in the section above. --bonadea contributions talk 09:19, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Just for the record, in hindsight I doubt the text I removed from Madhan (writer) was actually a copyvio. Seeing as goodreads.com is user-edited, someone may have copied it from Wikipedia (I didn't realize Madhan (writer) was copied from Madhan at the time). That's not to say it should necessarily be restored, however. Simplexity22 (talk) 10:34, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
