editmedical units
editBethune's article says he developed mobile medical supplies, not necessarily MASH type units that performed sophisticated life support near the front lines. But from that unreferenced notation, we have what I call "wiki-creep" or the transformation of vague info from one article into something with more definition into other articles. In any event, I've tagged the m-a-s-h mention in this article as citation needed.--S. Rich (talk) 23:36, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
killing of civilians
editWas this battalion involved in killing any of the thousands of Catholics killed in churches, or for being nuns or priests? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.163.226.18 (talk) 22:20, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
NPOV
editI'm cautious about editing the page itself as a noob to Wikipedia. But I think this article's NPOV status could be improved without necessarily altering the content much or, worse, taking the opposite and equally non-neutral POV.
Mainly, this passage: "The Canadians who died in the Spanish Civil War are not included in the Books of Remembrance in the Peace Tower and their sacrifice is not commemorated on federal war memorials or in Remembrance Day services. Those who survived the war are not entitled to veterans' benefits."
This is factual and I think this passage could remain in broadly similar form. But it seems tendentious and NNPOV unless it also notes something to the effect that as private citizens enlisted in a foreign service in a war in which Canada did not participate, they would not be entitled to any of that. In the absence of Canada being the country that recruited them or sent them to war, they are not Canadian veterans. Failing that, the quoted passage should be removed since its presence suggests this state of affairs is unusual or to be condemned. If not, why mention it?
Canadians also enlisted in the US military to fight in Vietnam, and in much smaller numbers have fought in local armies in various wars up to the present day such as those in the Balkans in the 1990s, and also are not commemorated or given benefits. The monument in Ottawa, at least, muddies the waters a bit. It was erected by private subscription but was permitted on public land and permitted to feature a national flag. To my knowledge, there are not monuments to other Canadians who enlisted privately in foreign armies.
