official name
editThis article should be moved back to "Mabry-Hazen House," which is its official name, the one the museum uses, and the name it is known by in all of Knoxville. Furthermore, the Wikipedia article for its builder uses Joseph Alexander Mabry, Sr., rather than Jr., due to confusion in historical literature. Bms4880 (talk) 20:56, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- I moved it back to Mabry-Hazen House for the reason that this is the real and official name of the house. --Orlady (talk) 16:49, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- So who built the house, anyway? Was it Joseph Alexander Mabry, Sr., who was born in 1826 and thus would have been 32 in 1858 when the house was built, or was it his son, as implied by the "Jr." designation on the house (but who couldn't possibly have been old enough in 1858 to build a substantial house)? The Tennessee Encyclopedia article[1] identifies the builder as Mabry Jr., born in 1826, which would suggest that the article Joseph Alexander Mabry, Sr. should be renamed to "Jr." If so, what was the name of the son who also died in the gunfight? --Orlady (talk) 23:45, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think I answered my own question, with several sources that identify the guy born in 1826 as "Jr." and one that identifies his son as "III." I renamed the article about him. --Orlady (talk) 23:55, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- Most authoritative sources use "Jr." for the 1826 Mabry, including the ETHS books Heart of the Valley and French Broad-Holston Country. The monument at Old Gray uses "Sr." for the 1826 Mabry and "Jr." for his son. Bms4880 (talk) 14:44, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
