Howdy! I am working to edit the lumberjack page as part of an assignment. I have included my sandbox link where I am working out the edits I am hoping to implement! https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Kb0204/sandbox-lumberjack Thank you! Kb0204 (talk) 19:06, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Mascots section revisited

edit

I'm convinced this doesn't need to be in the article. I had tagged it as {{trivia}}, but even with the excellent choice of removing names of schools that don't have Wikipedia articles, I still think the list is inappropriate. I would like to know why it's necessary to have such a list in this particular article, while articles about say, Wolves, Bears, Bulldogs, Tigers, etc., don't. Is it because the mascot is a human instead of an animal? And though it's certainly not a reason to not include it, is should be noted that such lists just attract more entries from every student at such a school, making maintenance more difficult. A one-sentence mention that several schools have such a mascot, with a couple examples, would suffice, but again there is a problem of people adding their school. (Perhaps why this list came about in the first place--I didn't check the page history.) But if a couple of the most notable examples were added, those who maintain this page could keep an eye on additions, perhaps adding an editing note. Thoughts? P.S. Here's the appropriate place to list college teams: List of college sports team nicknames. Katr67 (talk) 22:45, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I meant to get around to saying. Yes its trivia and doesn't belong here.--SabreBD (talk) 22:50, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

School mascots

edit

A statue of a lumberjack tops the football field's scoreboard at Richwood High School in Richwood, West Virginia.

The lumberjack is the mascot of many schools and universities including:

The article is weaker without this information. If you went to one of these schools then you too are a "lumberjack". That the "wolves" or "bears" or whatever don't get the same treatment is an issue with those articles. Just my opinion, but stripping this list hasn't improved the writing one bit. These universities are rooted in this history, but apparently acknowledging this with a sentence or two is too much. 24.117.137.215 (talk) 16:54, 28 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Images

edit

The "Statue of a stereotypical lumberjack in Portland, Oregon." is, in fact Paul Bunyan. I don't know that it is not also a stereotypical lumberjack, but he is very tall to be typical. Kenton is the Portland neighborhood in question: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Kenton,_Portland,_Oregon

Sexual culture

edit

Similar to a plummer, cowboy, or soldier, lumberjacks are popular fantasy objects of sexual (hetero and homo) culture. Shouls this be included? --Willthacheerleader18 (talk) 00:19, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nothing should be added to Wikipedia unless it can be adequately sourced using reliable sources. If you think this is relevant and important, feel free to begin the search for sources. As for my personal opinion, this is not important or encyclopedic. "Yes...It's Raining" 01:11, 18 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Choice of the image for the lead

edit

Half-year ago I replaced the image because felt that commons:File:Logging oregon.jpg is a fake (see annotations). Recently my arguments were proven void. I do not think the current image, File:Bundesarchiv Bild 183-2005-0706-524, Mark Brandenburg, Holzfäller bei der Arbeit.jpg, is worse in any way, but if one thinks that the image from Oregon is better for English Wikipedia, then feel free to put it back, moving Germans to some less prominent spot (or versa). Merging Lumbersexual here as per AFD

Hipster

edit

This article should explain why hipsters have assimilated the lumberjack aesthetic with the big bushy beards and yarn caps. 108.200.234.93 (talk) 07:48, 18 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Lumbersexual redirect

edit

Lubersexual redirects here. I don't think this is the same thing as a lumberjack. Lubersexual usually referrers to a US Pacific Nortwestern urbanite that melds a lumberjack and emo aesthetic (red flanel and ginormous bushy beards with Shawshank Redemption prison warden-style glassess). 139.138.6.121 (talk) 19:38, 20 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

LumberjackLogger (occupation) – Logger is the term commonly used today. Georgia guy (talk) 15:06, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Georgia guy gonna need to supply evidence that the term is more common rather than just claim it, because as far as I'm aware that's not the case. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 01:20, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
QuietHere, read the first paragraph of the article and it reveals that "lumberjack" is a term for long ago and that "logger" must be a term for today. Georgia guy (talk) 01:24, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
So the argument is WP:RECENTISM? Is that all you have? And it doesn't say it "must be" used today, just that people working in the field use it more frequently (and this sourced to a site which 1. probably isn't reliable and 2. doesn't actually make that claim or even use the term "lumberjack" at all). I'm definitely opposed to that. QuietHere (talk | contributions) 01:53, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
