A poetist is not (necessarily) a poetess
editSomeone changed the phrase "first Puerto Rican born poet to establish herself a reputation" to "first Puerto Rican born poetist to establish herself a reputation". I have to think the intended word was poetess, a female poet. Perhaps to avoid the repetition of the word 'poet'?
The difficulty is that there is a movement called poetism whose participants can style themselves 'poetists'. [Poetist Manifesto]. But since the movement was in the 1920's and 1930's these people, Lola Rodríguez de Tió and Maria Bibiana Benitez, wouldn't likely be part of it.
So I'm going to provocatively change these occurrences of 'poetist' to 'poetess', as they all are articles about Hispanic women poets, and it is likely a simple mis-hearing is the cause.
Her last name
editIt is actually Tió, not Tío.
Hey Amigo, how you doing? According to the majority of the websites, her last name contains the accent on the "i" and not the "o". Here are the sites [1]. Note that even the school named after her has the accent is on the "o". (Probably the sign maker flunked in History! Demf 14:19, 5 July 2006 (UTC) ) Thank you for your interest. - Actually the correct name is Tió with an accent on the o. Joelito 03:51, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
- O.K., a trusted friend has spoken. Tony the Marine 04:29, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
- According to Castillian language accentuation rules, it cannot be TIÓ but TIO, like dio (she gave) or fue (she went, she was), so if it's TIO it's like that and if not it's TÍO to separate the diphthong. You can find texts with fué* or dió*, but that's not correct nowadaysGaudio 11:34, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- Agree... since Tió (her last name... or more accurately, her husband's) is Catalan, not Castillian! Demf 14:15, 5 July 2006 (UTC) (BTW, my last name is Miró, not Miro...)
