I see no meaning in maintaining a different article on the schools in the Northern Province. There is a complete list of schools in Sri Lanka and the data in this article should be moved to it and articles merged. Cossde (talk) 17:48, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
- There are over 10,000 schools in Sri Lanka. The List of schools in Sri Lanka doesn't even come close to being a "complete list of schools in Sri Lanka". This article lists every school in the Northern Province.--obi2canibetalk contr 19:09, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
- What is the point of categorizing schools by province, as in this case? Provincial councils may control most of these schools, some are controlled by the central government. Therefore mixing up all types in additional data makes the reader more confused than informed. My suggestion is that the schools in this list be moved the List of schools in Sri Lanka in the appropriate categories of national, provincial, private and international based on the cities that they belong too. Cossde (talk) 14:29, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
- The point I was trying to make was that if all 10,000 schools were included in List of schools in Sri Lanka the article would become unwieldy. So it makes sense to sub-divide it by, for example, province. As it stands now if we move the 1,000 schools in this article to List of schools in Sri Lanka, schools from Northern Province would dominate the article. Besides, List of schools in Sri Lanka is IMO already unwieldy - it's just a long haphazard list of school names with prominence given to the bigger cities/towns and national schools.

- I don't think there is any confusion, the article is clearly titled List of schools in Northern Province, Sri Lanka and the intro mentions national, private and provincial schools.
- Provinces are a recognised geographic sub-division of Sri Lanka. The practice of subdividing articles and categories into geographic sub-divisions in order to prevent them becoming unwieldy is common in Wikipedia. For example, Category:Schools in Australia is sub-categorised into Category:Schools in Australia by state or territory which is then sub divided into categories for each state. At the moment categorising by province is appropriate because there aren't many school articles. As, and when, more articles are created the province category can be subdivided into districts and then into cities/towns/villages as necessary.--obi2canibetalk contr 18:41, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
- Actually I would have to agree with Obi2canibe, the List of schools in Sri Lanka article is too long in itself even though it is nowhere near complete, and only states the notable schools. I was infact thinking of separating this article into provinces, sometime in the future as well. This article lists pretty much all the schools in the Northern Province and it does so in a detailed way. I think this article could be used as a template for other provincial articles, which should be made so it isnt just the one in the series. Also I think it would be good if lists of schools were created by the category they are in, such as national, provincial etc.--Blackknight12 (talk) 02:26, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
- To reduce confusion I would suggest that the schools in this article be categorized by type. However as in the case of other countries such as Australia, in Sri Lanka Provinces maybe recognized geographic sub-division however administration may differ and be based on that of educational division which is a separate entity. Cossde (talk) 16:03, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
- I've tried to find similar lists for the other eight provinces but have been unsuccessful. So I'd suggest we do the following:
- 1. Create separate articles for the other eight provinces and copy content currently in List of schools in Sri Lanka to these articles (these articles can be converted to look like the Northern Province article if all the information needed can be found);
- 2. Create a separate list for the c100 private schools;
- 3. Keep List of schools in Sri Lanka just for the c400 national schools (and rename the article accordingly).
- Comments?--obi2canibetalk contr 19:50, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Designations for students' sex
editI am a bit confused about the notation used in this article that is supposed to indicate whether the schools take boys, girls, or both. So can somebody please explain to me the difference to be understood by these notations:
- B(G)=Boys with Girls
- G(B)=Girls with Boys
- M=Mixed
What exactly is the difference among these three categories? They all seem to represent pretty much the same thing, namely a school where you will find both girls and boys. Please clarify this distinction in the article — or if they are the same, ditch the B(G) and G(B) notations and change them to M.
By the way, no other provincial list of Sri Lankan schools uses this notation. Kelisi (talk) 21:00, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
