Talk:List of people from Cornwall

hehe

edit

hehe, actually given that the kingdom of Cornwall historically extended way beyond its present boundaries, it would probably be more inclusive than restrictive :) Sjc 05:29, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Second home owners?

edit

Surely many people listed here purely because they own a house that happens to be in Cornwall?

(If this is the critiria how about adding Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan?)

Talskiddy

By all means, remove any names that don't seem to belong. Not everybody who owns property in Cornwall becomes a Daphne du Maurier! QuartierLatin1968   16:31, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

'Cornish people' or 'notable residents of Cornwall'?

edit

I'm not totally against the idea of changing the name of this article to 'notable residents', but the move seems to flatly contradict the concern for removing people from the list whose Cornishness is tenuous. Anybody notable who buys a retirement home west of the Tamar could now be eligible for inclusion in this list, whereas previously we would have looked for some evidence of putting down roots in Cornwall or adopting some kind of personal identification with Cornwall. The advantage of using a somewhat vague expression like 'Cornish people', it seems to me, is that it can be expanded or restricted according to an individual's situation. But I'm open to being convinced. QuartierLatin1968   02:05, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

We could do with some sources on this article. --John (talk) 14:28, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Do the sources need to be on this article if they are in the target articles? DuncanHill (talk) 15:45, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes they do, and thank you for your work. --John (talk) 18:28, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I am not convinced that 'Literary-related' is a useful section: these two if they are valid could just go in 'Other' (there is nothing in the Angie Sage's article to show why she is relevant (a resident of Somerset apparently)).----Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 20:56, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cornish-Americans

edit

Can Americans of Cornish ancestry be added to the list?--jeanne (talk) 14:03, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest only if they have some other strong connexion with Cornwall (for example having lived in Cornwall, or written on it). I would be interested to see an article about Cornish Americans, or perhaps a category though! DuncanHill (talk) 03:03, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I only know of one Cornish-American who has his own article at Wikipedia. He wsn't born in Cornwall. I think an article would be good or at least a cat on Cornish-Americans.--jeanne (talk) 05:30, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I can think of a couple, Rick Rescorla, Arthur L. Collins. There are more, just can't remember them at the moment! DuncanHill (talk) 05:34, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I only know of this one, John Johns Trigg, however I do recall reading that actress Lauren Tewes is Cornish originally.--jeanne (talk) 05:47, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Elizabeth Arden was of Cornish stock I think? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Talskiddy (talkcontribs)
Funnily enough, here is something I threw together last month but never finished! --Joowwww (talk) 14:47, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's good. Why not upload it to Wikipedia? You could add that there were also lots of Cornishmen in Montana. There were Cornish immigrants to America before the 19th century. John Johns Trigg's ancestors immigrated from Cornwall to America in the 1660s. Johns is a common surname in Cornwall.--jeanne (talk) 15:09, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I've created a new article at Cornish American. I'm afraid what's written there is as far as my knowledge on that goes but the points you made sound like good ones for the article if you can expand on it. Regards, --Joowwww (talk) 15:38, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

This article is embarassing

edit

As a person of Cornish heritage may I say that this article is embarassing, in my opinion of course.

  • We have mythological/non-historical people on here, that were not even necessarily Cornish according to their legends, e.g. Corineus who was a Trojan and others who are claimed all over the place, Arthur- his mother was the wife of the Duke of Cornwall raped by Uther Pendragon according to the version of the legend that I know.
  • We have people on here who are not really Cornish at all. On this basis anyone who once had an ice-cream at Mevagissey could be classed as Cornish- and people laughed at the Irish football team all those years ago!

In my opinion, to qualify for this list one would have to be born in Cornwall or if not born in Cornwall descended from Cornish born parents within at least a few generations- an exception being someone whose family perhaps moved to Cornwall and was subsequently brought up there. I don't want to sound nasty, but I am sure people unerstand where I am coming from on this. Brythonek (talk) 12:15, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's just a list of people who are verifiably "from Cornwall". It's not about ethnic Cornish, people who are exclusively born in Cornwall or whatever other restrictive criteria one wants to make - it's just a list about people from Cornwall. Readers can make up their own mind who is Cornish, and who aint - let's not force it on them. --Jza84 |  Talk  18:00, 29 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Self-reference

edit

List articles shouldn't begin with "This is a list of X", but for the life of me I can't think of how to introduce it properly. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 22:29, 22 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Actually, according to Wikipedia:SELFREF#Avoid referring to "Wikipedia", one should avoid referring to Wikipedia in articles (e.g., "this Wikipedia article...") but it is perfectly appropriate for an article to refer to itself (e.g., "this article..."). --- c y m r u . l a s s (talk me, stalk me) 21:51, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rescorla clarification

edit

The relevant edit summary should have included "not": he is eligible for the list of soldiers as "Cornish people" can include members of the Cornish diaspora.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 11:19, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

This could be made clearer: he was Cornish born, then settled in the United States, so qualifies here. Some Cornish Americans (descendants from Cornish who immigrated) are left out. The specialised lists e.g. those of Cornish artists, Cornish soldiers, etc. may not be defined as this list is.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 12:31, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sportsmen and women

edit

Adding them to List of Cornish sportsmen and sportswomen would be more useful than just entering them here.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 08:52, 22 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
