Crabhouse in Winghale Priory

edit

I'm puzzled by this entry. Is it correct? [1] refers to Benedictine alien grange of Seez Abbey, founded in 1115, dissolved in 1400, seen as earthworks. at SOUTH KELSEY, Lincolnshire [2] refers to Crabhouse or Crabb's Abbey, for Augustinian Canonesses founded c. 1181. at WIGGENHALL ST MARY MAGDALEN, Norfolk --Brunnian (talk) 05:38, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Winghale Priory is now a farm, just off Waddingham Road, South Kelsey. I don't know where the connection with Crabhouse comes from, but it's not something I've heard of before. But I wouldn't expect to, even after living most of my life in the next village. It could be OR, either way, but Wiggenhall and Winghale are alike enough in sound that somebody could have supposed a connection. 88.110.2.50 (talk) 23:09, 13 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Should this be on this page? Surely it should be in the Suffolk page? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brunnian (talkcontribs) 06:12, 13 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Stamford Austin Priors

edit

Stamford has a house and a road called Austin Priors - should there be an Augustinian entry? --Brunnian (talk) 22:35, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but maybe not at Austin Friars. This site makes reference to The Friars of the Sack and their being succeeded by Augustinians but on the east of the town.--[[User:Robert EA Harvey|Rob--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 02:14, 22 February 2011 (UTC)ert EA Harvey]] (talk) 01:56, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Preceptories

edit

There is a list of preceptories at Template:Lincolnshire preceptories, which I have translcuded into some of the new articles created from redlinks here. But four of them, Gainsborough Preceptory, Great Limber Preceptory, Limber Magna, Horkstow Preceptory and Willoughton Preceptory describe the preceptory as a Priory. I'm not convinced they were: I can find no reference to this elsewhere. Certainly the VCH does little to support the idea: rather suggesting that preceptories were managed either by monks or lay noblemen. But I am not an expert so I have not modified these entries, just flagged them {{dubious}}

Furthermore, the Transcluded list includes Eagle, Lincolnshire and Byards Leap which don't appear in this list!

Just found Eagle in this list, and have changed the linked page to a redirect by way of an experiment. --Robert EA Harvey (talk) 15:19, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dubious

edit

I am still unconvinced by the idea of a Priory at Willoughton, especially the idea of one with a separate existance from the preceptory. In the list the Priory is shown as passing to Kings College after dissolution, but the quoted authorities give this as the fate of the Preceptory. It seems to me that the Preceptory include a house (such is given in the VCH) and that may have served as the alien house. I can't find any reference to a separate Prior. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, but the duplication in the list seems wrong to me. --Robert EA Harvey (talk) 13:13, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

This seems unresolved--Robert EA Harvey (talk) 19:23, 25 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have started a discussion at Talk:List of abbeys and priories in England#Use of abbreviations which applies to all of the "List of monastic houses in X" (where X = counties of England) articles. The contributions of any interested editor would be welcome.— Rod talk 12:44, 12 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
