editThe ambition of List of islands by name is to create a comprehensive list of nearly all (unnamed and small islets can be included, but this information is not (yet) available online) islands on earth, sorted by name, giving an A-Z overview of all articles that cover islands.
When naming an article on an island, take into consideration the Wikipedia naming convention for geographic names:
Use modern English names for titles and in articles. Historical names or names in other languages can be used in lead if popular and important enough that they are valuable to readers, should be avoided in titles unless no English version exists and should be used in articles with caution.
Artificial islands
editShould artificial islands be included? Brz7
Too long for one article
editSurely there are too many to list the whole world in one article without a minimum size/population? Surely it makes more sense to break it down by region/country. Consider the size of the two small areas (in world-wide terms) covered by List of islands of Ireland and List of islands of Scotland. --JBellis 19:10, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- In case the article size is exceeded the list could be split up in smaller lists by continent (?, or smaller), but that would need quite some work since now islands from all over the world are included in the list. The ambition is to name all island that carry a name, which is not a sine cure ;)--Brz7 00:14, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
I am thinking very stongly of turning this into an index page, and having a separate page for each letter of the alphabet. It will be a lot of work to set up, but would make navigation much easier. Any thoughts? Npeters22 13:22, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
- Looks nice like this, it ends the discusson on the length of the article, or? Brz7 20:01, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- They do say to be bold. I'm glad you like. It's not perfect, since you can't scan the entire list too quickly, but it would be too large if it was kept together. The "S" list alone is over the article size!Npeters22 01:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- ..and let's boldly go where no one has gone before (as far as lists of islands online is concerned)..and there shalt be more island names starting with "X"..Brz7 20:00, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Under construction
editThese lists of islands have yet to be integrated in this list:
Utterly indiscriminate
editThis seems utterly unmaintainable and indiscriminate. Are we going to have an entry for every spot of land in the middle of every lake? Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 05:14, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
