Linking to scientific names

edit

This list originally included Latin names, but did not link to them. I included the links, and as a by-product, just by looking for list entries where one link was blue and one was red, I was able to find several useful things.

Where the original link was red, but the Latin name link is blue, we do have an article on the fish, but not under the "common" name:

I created redirects except for striped puffer and tiger puffer, because I wasn't sure that those names were unambiguous.

Where the original link was blue, but the the Latin name link was red, the situation was a little trickier. In one case, the common name actually went to the right fish:

In all other cases, the common name link went to an incorrect article:

I am still making some effort work out some of the confusion, creating disambiguation pages and redirects and so on.

Anyway, my point is to encourage editors to please include a link to the Latin name of a species, especially when the there is any doubt about the English name, and that in a long list like this one, there inevitably will be doubt about many of the English names.

Thanks to Visviva for the considerable work in creating the article in the first place.

Formatting Ideas

edit

I created the page "Freshwater fishes of Washington" and was responsible for the name change of this page. I'm working my way through lists for other states. When I created my page I was urged to follow the format of another page (Estonian fishes I think)and did. I think the format I used for that page would improve this page. I suggest two changes here: 1) including order and family, 2) capitalizing the first letter of all names, which I think is wikipedia standard. I would be willing to do this for this page, but am reluctant to make big changes without consulting those who made the page. I know how irritating it can be to have a lot of work you did "improved".--Busaccsb (talk) 19:26, 17 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
