Regarding my recent edits

I deleted this site:

as it seemed to me that this is one breeder's site for selling one particular breed, rather than a breed club. Left it here so it can be replaced if necessary. Quill 21:59, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Breeds according to who?

I don't see what orgainzation these breeds are pedigreed in sex. I think that the Cat Faciers' Association or some other organization should be the authority on listed cat breeds. Non-pedigreed breeds can be labeled as such and listed after the others. If no one objects I might make these changes to the page.

I don't think that decision should be unilateral. Which Cat Fancy Associations (U.S.?)listing are you going to use, and why? How are you going to decide what is a bona fide breed? Are you going to include the breeds of the Traditional Cat Association? I'm not saying the list shouldn't be clear, just point out some of the issues we wrestle with in the Dog Project. Also, could you sign off on your posts? Thanks Quill 22:10, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I also don't think it should be unilateral, that's why I posted here ;-) About the "bona fide breed," the purpose of my post was to add some kind of recognized authority to this issue. Maybe this is more difficult than I first thought. What do you do in the Dog Project? Liblamb 00:03, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Nah, I realized that--you seem a reasonable sort. What do we do in the Dog Project? Suffer, mostly....No, in all seriousness, in the Dog Project we include just about everything, with notations if necessary. "Recognized" dog breeds are listed according to the name given by the FCI; it's sometimes problematic, like, what do with do with Schnauzer and is it Fox Terrier, Smooth/Smooth Fox Terrier or Fox Terrier (Smooth)?
Non-recognized breeds are also listed. So are (shudder) all the various '--oodles' and '-poos'. We have articles on dog hybrids and crossbreeds and mongrels.
In a way, it might be easier for you because cat fancy is not as well-established (longevity, I mean) and you have way fewer breeds. On the other hand, it helps us that dog fancy orgs are clearly defined...usually...there are also UKCIs and things....

Next idea for breed listing: Above the current breed listing it states, "Following is a list of all the currently recognised cat breeds." How about we replace it with the following example? Will this be too cumbersome?

"Following is a list of cat breeds. The recognizing organizations for each bread are in parenthesis after the breed name. Breed description may vary slightly between organizations. An abbreviation legend of the organizations is at the bottom of the page."

  • ACF - Australian Cat Federation (Inc)
  • CFA - Cat Fanciers' Association Inc.
A good reference to list all the breeds of catsa is the www.messybeast.com archive. It has the advantage of not being affiliated with any particular registry, thus is free of some breed nomenclature wars that you see between some of these registries.--Ramdrake 02:21, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Organization

You may find it better to leave the love handles as it is. One of the things I've noticed at the Dog Project is that the more complicated your list is and the more lists that you have, the harder it is to remember where everything is when you have to make a correction or an update.

I don't think that there's anything wrong with the amendments you suggest above. However, that's going to be a lot of work for you. Unless a whole lot of people are working on it at once, you may run out of steam and then you have a list with some affiliations listed and some not. Can you simply leave the list as a straightforward one and then add the affiliations to the breed table at each breed's article? Otherwise, everytime someone adds a breed, you'll have to add the info in both places.

I'm sure Sannse or Elf could help you more; they've got experience with the Dog Project and Wikipedia in general. Quill 23:10, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Removed merge suggestion

I removed the merge suggestion template because no discussion has taken place since March 2006. --Ginkgo100 talk 22:21, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
