Excessive External links...

edit

Taken from Talk:Animal sanctuary...

I noticed that someone had tagged this list for excessive external links... I think this list should follow the same standards that most other lists do, if the place does not have a wikipedia article, it should probably not be listed... Although there are exceptions to this rule for "notable even though they don't have an article yet" places (for example, I know Big Cat Rescue in Tampa is fairly notable regionally), it keeps every "backyard sanctuary" from adding themselves (like the one that had MySpace for their website that I just removed)... I just went through and cleared out all of the redlinks/nolinks from the list, and will probably work on the article further in the next couple days... If someone else is willing to help, we need to figure out which places still on the list have a wikipedia article, and properly link to their article instead of their website... and if they do not have an article, they should probably be removed (as having a surviving aticle would be a sure sign of notability)... - Adolphus79 (talk) 17:36, 1 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've cleared out all the external links. I've not checked to see if the remainder have internal links, but I agree with Adolphus79 regarding the notability criteria. Mrh30 (talk) 14:20, 4 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I just did some cleanup where someone had dropped the country of Malta in the middle of the U.S. section. Is the standard across wikipedia on lists like these, to only list those that have wiki articles? If so, I'd be willing to go through and cross-reference and delete/tag where appropriate. I'd appreciate some guidance as a new user! --Jonddunn (talk) 23:34, 19 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

India

edit

I don't believe the link over to the Wildlife sanctuaries of India is really appropriate here, by definition. The term sanctuary as it's defined for this list seems to be facilities that are man made to care for animals who can no longer be in the wild, or in some cases, farm/domestic animals that are either being rehabilitated or are living out their lives. The list of India's "sanctuaries" seems to be more like what would be considered a national park, or a protected area. I would like to propose we remove that, and list some actual Indian animal sanctuaries per the going definition. --Jonddunn (talk) 23:41, 19 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Extensive overhaul complete

edit

The page now has at least a wikipedia article or an external link for every sanctuary listed here, thus at least assuring their existence. The obvious next step would be to create actual wikipedia articles for all that do not have one- and especially those for which someone in the past has (aspirationally?) set up a red wikilink... or, where attempts fail to establish wikinoteworthiness and publish an article, remove the mention of said sanctuary.Yadsalohcin (talk) 22:37, 1 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Serious culling... complete

edit

This article had become the advertising ground of every non-notable sanctuary with a website. There was no "published" inclusion criteria in the lede, but Wikipedia policies have been clear about similar lists in the past: if it's not notable enough for a wiki article of its own, it's not notable enough to include it. So I added that inclusion criteria and culled the list of every entry that didn't have an article in English Wikipedia. Then I culled all the remaining external links to a sanctuary's website or Facebook page. The result is a list that is about 1/8th the size it was two hours ago. What I did NOT do was to read each article to evaluate if an entry was a "rescue", but is not a sanctuary (per description in Animal sanctuary). Nor did I examine the foreign wildlife sanctuaries to see if they fit the definition in Animal sanctuary or whether they were just a "park" of some type. I'll leave such evaluations to others... or for another time. Normal Op (talk) 05:38, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
