Type 86 was a radio, not a radar
editThis page lists "Type 86" as a radar, specifically as a forerunner to Type 286. However, I cannot find any evidence of the existence of such a radar. No other similar lists of WW2 British Naval Radar lists such a type. However, Norman Friedman in "British Submarines: Two World Wars" (first published 2019) states: "Type 86 was the standard British bridge-to-bridge tactical radio, equivalent to the US TBS".
Norman Friedman in "British Destroyers and Frigates: The Second World War and After" references the Type 86 multiple times in the book, calling it "Type 86 VHF radio antenna (ship-to-ship and ship-to-air)" and "Type 86 VHF radio, which was fitted on board 'Hunts'). It does in one place refer to a Type 86 radar, however I believe this is a mistake, as the next drawing on the page with the same antenna calls it: a Type 86 VHF radio.
