Extinct
editWhat does the "Extinct" notation on some of the entries mean? —EncMstr 06:51, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- I take it to mean that the mural has been covered over or painted over, as with the one in Detroit: Instead of seeing the nice whale mural on that tall building, the paying customers at Comerica Park are now blessed with a Verizon Wireless ad. Lovely. Baseball Bugs 06:56, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- That is sad, and nearly a reasonably quirky use of extinct. If true, maybe "removed" would be a better choice? —EncMstr 07:04, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Well, it's kind of a POV-push, but it could also be seen as humorous in a way. It's not a real whale, just a painting. And unless there was something in his contract that said it would last forever, then that's the way things go. Now that I think of it, maybe that question could be explored. Has he made any public statements about his whales being painted over? Assuming he was paid to do the paintings, once he gets his money maybe his attitude is, "That's show biz!" - You could possibly defuse any potential POV complaint by putting " " around the word. :) Baseball Bugs 08:18, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Assuming he was paid to do the paintings
- He doesn't get paid to do the walls. He donates them to the cities to raise awareness of marine life conservation. The one in my city was demolished to make a new freeway, and our idiot county executive suggested that Wyland pay to replace the wall he tore down. I think he asks local businesses to donate paint and such, but his time and art are donated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.229.187.158 (talk) 20:30, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Pictures
editIt would be nice, i think, if there were more examples of pictures, running down the right side of the page. Llamabr (talk) 21:43, 6 October 2009 (UTC)
Chicago Painting Gone
editI recently saw two pictures of the Chicago painting which is on the back of the InterCOntinental hotel on North Michigan Avenue. I then popped up StreetView because I've been in that neighborhood a lot, but never saw the painting. That's because the "Avenue East" condo building was built right in front of the painting. In streetview, you can just make out a little bit of the blue water peeking out from the rear of the Intercontinental. I would change the article myself to say "Obstructed" because as far as I know, the painting is still there, just forever covered over, but I don't know the wikipedia formatting and would rather not mess it all up. If one of you could please make that correction, I'd appreciate it.

Detroit
editAs of at least 2011-05-29 the mural is again unobscured. ZoidPod (talk) 05:35, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Not a Wall, but it's definately a Whalen...
editThere is a Humpback whale painted on the bow of the Norwegian Bliss cruise ship, signature and all!!! It was moored at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal in Portsmouth, Va back during the height of Co-Vid. I have a couple photos but I do not know how to post it here. 68.107.159.107 (talk) 16:22, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
