Can I add these columns?

edit

I realise this is a FL so wanted to check this first. I would like to add two new columns to the list which may be of interest to readers: 'Born outside Scotland' and 'Never played senior football in Scotland'. The first factor is pretty easy to verify as long as the birthplace is known at all. The second part is a bit more subjective as there are quite a few players who moved to English teams at a young age, but in most cases it should be fairly simple to discern who played as an adult in Scotland and who didn't. I realise the birthplace in particular can be a controversial issue, but if a simple Yes/No for the criteria is applied there is no implication of any judgement being made over who is is "really Scottish" or similar (nor do I have any desire for it to serve that function). But I do think it is interesting how many players would fall into either category. Let me know what you think. Crowsus (talk) 08:55, 14 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

No, I wouldn't want either of those being included. I don't see why either of them are relevant to this list. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 09:09, 14 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Well, the relevancy is due to the primary criteria for Scotland team selection being a Scottish birthplace, so it's fairly unusual (less so nowadays of course) for that not to be the case; likewise, although more common in the smaller UK nations than most other countries due to the pull and scouting of English teams, it is quite rare for a player to represent a nation where they have never played pro football. I would agree it would add undue importance to these factors to add columns for them and would also disrupt the display... But adding them as a note instead would be far less disruptive, but still allow the information to be included....? Crowsus (talk) 09:50, 14 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it's relevant information to this article. It's not included in other similar articles. If these are (notable) topics of interest, then they should have their own articles. As for "it is quite rare for a player to represent a nation where they have never played pro football", that's perfectly normal for countries which cannot sustain a professional league. That's not just the smaller UK nations, that applies to many African countries. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 10:09, 14 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
So... Um... Turns out such an article already exists: List of Scotland international footballers born outside Scotland. Not only that, but its on my watch list so I have obviously visited it in the past (and have only had an account for 2 years, so it wasn't that long ago). And you (JM) were the last editor on it! So this has all been a big waste of our time. Apologies. I do think the never played in Scotland angle is a decent topic, it's a finite list of players after all, do you think it could be added as a section to the Born Outside article or should I create a new one? Crowsus (talk) 10:33, 14 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

(Unindent) Scotland players who have never played in Scotland? I suspect that would get deleted. There were was a similar / connected issue 30-40 years ago ("Anglo" players), and the media sometimes comment if there are no/few/many Scottish-based players in the team, but I don't think it has ever been discussed in the context of "oh, he's never played in Scotland". That is what would be needed for that specific topic to be notable. The only national team I have seen that "issue" mentioned in connection with is England, because it is exceptionally rare. Joe Baker had only played for Hibs before he was first selected by England (he later played for Arsenal and Forest), and I think Owen Hargreaves was the second player of that kind (he later played for Man Utd, of course). I'm not sure if there has been anyone like that since then. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 10:51, 14 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Someone please add Goalkeeper David Harvey to the list ... 77.100.152.137 (talk) 09:42, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

He's not missing, this is only for players with 25+ caps. Please see List of Scotland international footballers (5–24 caps), he's there. Crowsus (talk) 10:50, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
