Johnjoe O'Connor
editThe entry for Johnjoe O'Connor seems to be highly dubious. Johnjoe O'Connor does not appear on the Garda Roll of Honour list; I can find no reliable sources mentioning the incident, barring one, which is a mention in this Irish Independent article which was published after the entry was added to this article (diff) and quotes the entry rather closely. Given that the death of a Garda while on active duty is a relatively rare occurrence and thereby generates a lot of media coverage, and this incident allegedly occured in 2000, so well within the Internet age, it would be covered by many online sources, but there are none, barring the one mentioned above and I would suggest some reporter might have been doing their research on Wikipedia there. - Good spot! I agree with your original intention to omit this entry, there is no reliable source that this event actually occurred. I've removed it now and we could always include it again in the future if its true and necessary. Good work. Thanks. IrishSpook (talk) 20:48, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
- Just for the record, I wasn't actually the IP who deleted it originally, but I had seen the edit that night in my watchlist and agreed with it, after checking it of course; it would have helped if the IP editor had left a reason in the summary. Obviously not a reason for Wikpedia purposes, but I could remember pretty well all the incidents in the list personally, barring one or two of the motor accidents, as far back as the 1970s. The fact that I couldn't remember that one was the spur to check further and to be honest, if it was a real event, by its nature. there would be a lot of coverage out there.
