– Per WP:NCLIST. Note that this is a sample nomination, extracted from a set of over 850 such lists in Category:Lists of films by year and its subcategories. Further details in the extended rationale below. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:47, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- Extended rationale: I have placed the full list at User:BrownHairedGirl/Film lists for renaming. I selected the 2012 lists as the sample, because the current lists seemed to me to be most likely to watched by active editors.
Per WP:NCLIST, "Standard practice is to entitle list articles as List of ___ (for example list of Xs)". Each of these articles consists of list of films, so there is no reason for them to depart from the convention. - In each case, it would be possible to write an encyclopedic article "Fooish films of 2012" which is not a list, setting out trends, describing themes explored and cinematographic styles, and comparing critical reactions, box-office data, etc. Using the "List of Xs" format makes it clear to both readers and editors what these pages contain.
- Note that some sets under Category:Lists of films by country by year have been named with the "lists of" prefix for some time, such as Category:Lists of American films by year and Category:Lists of Canadian films by year. Some others such as those in Category:Lists of Turkish films by year, have been manually renamed by me over last month, without controversy.
- So far, the only reason I can see to oppose these renamings would be:
- concerns about the sorting of the lists in categories. However, I have already been through all of these lists with AWB to standardise the categorisation, and in each case have added the appropriate sort keys so that they will sort correctly when renamed. If I have missed any, I will fix them after the move.
- Most of these lists are linked through a series of templates, which will need updating afterwards. I undertake to do that if the page moves proceed.
- There may of course be other concerns that I have not foreseen. I will notify the relevant Wikiprojects. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:47, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- My recommendation is to keep the names shorter. Instead of adding an s we prefix List of and add an s, so we use List of Tamal films, for example. But by adding "of 2010", we create a WP:SETINDEX, and List of is superfluous. Apteva (talk) 17:55, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- None of these pages is a set index. "A set index article is a list article about a set of items of a specific type that share the same (or similar) name", but the films in these lists do not share a similar name. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:15, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- Please see the similar discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Film/Indian_cinema_task_force#Bollywood_films_of_XXXX. The thought is to call them for example "2012 in Bollywood" in a similar manner as the already existing 2012 in film. More content could be added so that it is not just a list. - Quite an ambitious effort, and I think one worth exploring. I am all for anything that improves consistency across naming conventions on Wikipedia. My concern: whoever changes the titles should ALSO make sure that all of the affected articles are classified as "List-Class" on the corresponding talk pages. Fortdj33 (talk) 19:36, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- Many of them are already classified that way in the relevant project banners. However, if the page moves proceed, then that should of course be done for all of them. It;s the sort of task which a bot could do quite easily, so if the moves are implemented I will make a request at WP:BOTREQ. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:10, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- Support - if we're doing it already, then let's be consistent. In ictu oculi (talk) 02:25, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- Support: for consistency with other similar articles per WP:CRITERIA of article titles.--Michaela den (talk) 19:33, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- Support: It has been moved already. Can some admin please close this discussion?--GDibyendu (talk) 15:54, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
