editI am not sure why this naked list was split off the main article, where it appeared in context. Especially seeing that the main article isn't in any way suffering from excessive length. --dab (𒁳) 10:28, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

References desperately needed
editThere is very little direct evidence of Anglo-Saxon heathenry. For some deities, such as Freo, nothing has been found. For others, such as Ing-Frea, interpretations of placenames are important, and have been disputed. For some, such as Woden and Tiw, some of the data consists of clerics' reports about the beliefs of viking raiders and settlers in the Danelaw. There's even less certainty about the functions or roles ascribed to these gods and goddesses. So it's important not to present a more definite picture than the scholarship warrants, and it's doubly important to give references to the scholarship so the reader can check and obtain further information. - Looking at this article, I'm thinking that it should just be redirected to List of Germanic deities, where it's all already covered. As pointed out above, there are multiple issues with this article, which I also noticed, including some outright misinformation. Does anybody object to the redirect? :bloodofox: (talk) 18:38, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
- I reopened this article because I found a list would be helpful (in fact a group I was in elsewhere pointed to the lack of such an article as a problem with Wikipedia). The version I've laid out is very provisional, and I agree with the stance that there are issues fundamental to the topic - not very many are directly attested, and most of those have direct cognates with Norse or other Germanic deities. Regardless, I think a list along the lines I've put would be helpful to clarify these very issues rather than make it seem like the topic has been suppressed somehow. There should indeed be several references and emphasis on the issues you raise, which I'm trying to put together. Harsimaja (talk) 01:16, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
