Lawrence Harman King-Harman was a very significant figure in Longford and Ireland in the nineteenth century, politically and socially. As the largest landowner in the county he had enormous influence over the selection of political representatives and over the nature of the reform of land ownership during and after the Great Famine. His home and his memorial are both significant local landmarks and he has family connections to numerous other major figures in Irish history.
