Please add Lawrence Gonzi to Roman Catholic Politicians section, thanks. He is catholic and it would nice to find him under the list of catholic politicians!

What does 'KUOM' signify? Is it something to do with the Order of Malta? - (Aidan Work 23:54, 14 December 2005 (UTC))Reply

"KUOM" stands for "Kumpann ta' l-Unur, Ordni tal-Mertu" ("Companion of Honour, Order of Merit"). It is part of the system of awards awarded by the Maltese Government (see the Gieh ir-Repubblika Act: [1]) and, as such it is unrelated to the Order of Malta. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.15.96.17 (talk • contribs) 09:43, 17 December 2005 UTC.

Thanks for that. When listing Maltese related honours, could you please indicate in the article whether it is an award of the Order of Malta or one issued by the British Commonwealth Republic of Malta. - (Aidan Work 02:45, 18 December 2005 (UTC))Reply

Was KUOM removed? No pic of the Maltese prime minister? Shame! Maltesedog 19:17, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

In article: In 1987 Lawrence Gonzi contested the general elections unsuccessfully with the Nationalist Party. He was appointed Speaker of the House in 1988 and in 1992..., when he was unsuccessful in gen. election in 1987, how he became the Chief of the House in 1988? --Misbeliever (talk) 13:43, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I see that your question has gone unanswered for a long time. Section 59(2)(b) of the Maltese Constitution[2] permits the appointment of a Speaker from outside the House of Representatives. Demdem (talk) 17:45, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

What's the relevance?

edit

Two sections have been added to this article. One goes into some depth about his address to the UN General Assembly which was not particularly significant either as an event or in as regards the substance of the speech. The second is about the Lockerbie disaster and seemed to have found its way here for no other reason that a comment (of no particular consequence) was made by Gonzi.

In my view, the two sections are out of place and proportion. Any good reason why should these two sections stay?

Demdem (talk) 18:07, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

From a parochial Maltese perspective, you can certainly argue that "the two sections are out of place and proportion".
However, taking the wider view, Gonzi's address to the United Nations was an impressive tour de force which put Malta firmly onto the world stage. Equally, the Lockerbie issue is of great international interest - see Release of Abdelbaset Al Megrahi - and the Malta connection is currently very much in the spotlight.
I believe the two sections should not only remain, but be expanded in the light of further developments.Vandagard (talk) 19:04, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah sure, the "parochial Maltese perspective" I seem to share with all major world media who have have not taken note of the "impressive tour de force" that was you claim this address.
As to the Lockerbie disaster the point is not whether it is important but why it is here. Demdem (talk) 17:40, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I have corrected the link to the official UN site http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/MT.shtml which reports on Gonzi's speech to the General Assembly.
An extract from http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Lockerbie_disaster#Lockerbie_inquiry_demands appears here because it involves Malta and its Prime Minister.Vandagard (talk) 19:19, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Adding some 4,000 words to a 2,000 word article on two very minor matters (Gonzi's address to the UGLA was not his first, what was said there was not particularly new or relevant and same goes for an opinion he expressed on the aftermath of the release of the Lockerbie bomber) should be done with justification. If you do think Gonzi's was a "tour de force" and put Malta "firmly on the world stage" please quote some sources. Otherwise this article cannot be allowed to be defaced.

Demdem (talk) 12:12, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Blanking by Demdem of whole sections of the article that idiosyncratically he happens to disagree with is the real vandalism here. I have reverted that blanking. Vandagard (talk) 15:32, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. What you did was pretty obvious -- no need for telling -- what I had hoped for were the reasons why. Looks like I was wasting my time. Care to try before I remove, once more, your "graffiti"?
