I think that excluding the winners from the main article is silly, and I'm moving them in. Wincoote 19:50, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

editAdded a fair amount of content and corrected a few bits - been working on the official website for the last couple of months, should my credentials need confirmation! --Rillaith 10:34, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
Inconsistent sport names
editYelena Isinbayeva, who does pole vault, is listed as track and field, while Sergey Bubka is listed as pole vault. They should both be list under the same sport name for consistency. I'm changing Bubka to track and field since there are other athletes under track and field. --Scuac (talk) 00:45, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Daimler
editThe article states that the awards were founded by Daimler, among others, in 1999. This links to a disambiguation page. I considered correcting this to Daimler AG, but then I saw that this was the name used after the demerger in 2007. So should the founding patron be DaimlerChrysler AG, which was the company formed by the merger of Daimler-Benz and Chrysler in 1998? Coyets (talk) 10:35, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
Years
editAthletes receive awards for achievements in the previous year. For example, Usain Bolt won the 2009 award Sportsman of the Year for success in 2008. We're supposed to write that Bolt was Sportsman of the Year for 2008 and 2009. And all the other years, we should reduce by one. --Aca Srbin (talk) 18:59, 9 January 2011 (CET)
- OK i get it, so Novak Djokovic will be prized in year 2012 for this year achievements. --94.140.88.117 (talk) 19:41, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- Whilst I agree that your statement is factually correct (the 2011 Sportsman of the Year is awarded in 2011 based on performance in 2010), in all news articles, press releases, and anything else written/spoken (whether by Laureus or 3rd parties such as newspapers), it's always "The 2011 Sportsman of the Year is ..." or "The Sportsman of the Year 2011 is..." - i.e. the award name contains the award year, and the person is the current awardee during the awarding year. Therefore I would oppose the suggestion that all years are reduced by one in the article. (Disclosure: I used to work for the web agency who managed their web presence and have attended the Awards every year from 2007-2011 in a support role. I no longer have any involvement with Laureus, jsut an insider's knowledge.) Rillaith (talk) 17:37, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
World Sports Awards of the Century
editWhere is an article about the "World Sports Awards of the Century" from 1999 in Vienna, Austria? With Pele, Muhammad Ali, etc etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.116.242.76 (talk) 17:04, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
Rescinded awards
editWe need some uniformity in how the four rescinded awards are shown. These are Armstrong (Sportsman 2003) and (Comeback 2000), Connor (Disabled 2004) and Jones (Sportswoman 2000) "Rescinded" is the term that is used and if you click on the winner on the Laureus page you get "Award rescinded after the sporting successes on which the Laureus World Sports Academy voted have been revoked by the relevant sport governing body."
How about a standard of striking through the winner's name and the one foot note for all cases with Laureus's preferred phrasing. We can choose whether "Rescinded" appears next to the name too.--Peter cohen (talk) 01:40, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

History
edit- "South African businessman Johann Rupert, chairman of Richemont, proposd that an organisation be created "based on the principle that sport can bridge the gaps in society and change the way people look at the world." - proposed
- "name being derived from the Greek word for laurel," - make a slight adjustment to this text so it reads as its name being derived from the Greek word for laurel,
- You may want to consider explaining who Jeff Bridges, Dylan McDermott and Earle Connor are. Also do the same with Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones as you have done in the lead.
Discretionary awards
edit- "awarded the first and only Sporting Inspiration Award" - add was at the start of this section of text.
References
edit- This is more slanted to FAC but you may want to consider archiving the remainder of the sources if appropriate.
Overall this is a quite neatly written article that you have put together. The only quibbles from me are minor copy-edits MWright96 (talk) 21:30, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi MWright96, done all of the above apart from the archiving. I'm more than happy to do it, but do you know of a way of doing it for an entire article, rather than just one link at a time? Cheers for the review. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:37, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
- I happen to know there is this programme called IBot Management which allows for the automated archiving of sources on a page. Anyway it's not a major deal breaker so am now promoting this article to GA status
- I'd already run that, it doesn't archive links, just adds links to archives which already exist... but thanks for the review! The Rambling Man (talk) 09:05, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

Pre FT quick questions
editHi TRM,
- "...honouring individuals..." - and teams? or are teams covered by "sporting achievements"
- "...held in ten cities around the world..." - eleven? unless counting Estoril as only a town or is considered part of Lisbon? (ten cities also appears under Ceremony.)
- "...a gold Cartier Laureus statuette..." - remove "gold" per the following sentence? JennyOz (talk) 08:27, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Who won the 2018 Award for Best Sporting Moment?
editAccording to the section Best Sporting Moment, the 2018 award was won by the Iowa Hawkeyes football team. However, the table in the section Winners by year says that the winner is Associacao Chapecoense de Futebol. They contradict each other. Who won the award? ~ Caleb KG (talk) 13:06, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
