Talk:Karl Ernst von Baer

Russian Geographical Society

edit

There's a major error here that should be corrected. Baer was never president of the Russian Geographical Society. He was, for a time, chairman of its Ethnographic Division (I believe the dates were 1845-1848 and then 1858 to 1860). The nominal leader of the Geographic Society was the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, while the practical responsibilities were carried out by the Vice-President Fedor Litke. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.198.156.193 (talk) 15:55, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Lamarckism

edit

"Baer was evolutionist, however critical towards Darwin's theory. Baer has established a major alternative to the darwinian paradigm in biology."

Er, yeah. Is this right in saying that he followed, Lamarckism, which is demonstrably nonsense, and isn't an alternative paradigm at all. Dunc| 15:23, 23 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Uncited espionage claims

edit

Someone added the following uncited material. It may have some value if evidence for it can be found. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:49, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

/* ===Espionage ===*/

"According to the material found from Russian archives by an Estonian historian, Aadu Must, Karl Ernst von Baer can be considered to be the founder of Russian foreign intelligence service, which was the predecessor of the spy services of the Soviet Union. Just like many of the National Security Agency related projects that were revealed by the Edward Snowden, Baer used data analysis as the means for implementing foreign intelligence. Rumor is that Baer's role as the creator of data analysis based foreign intelligence is taught as part of the history course to United States higher intelligence officials.[citation needed]"

The main source is probably this story but even there researcher Erki Tammiksaar refutes the claim as taken out of context. --Jaan Pärn (talk) 16:05, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

natural selection

edit

"From his studies of comparative embryology, Baer had believed in the transmutation of species but rejected later in his career the theory of natural selection proposed by Charles Darwin." I think this is intended to say "From his studies of comparative embryology, Baer had believed in the transmutation of species but rejected this, later in his career, in favor of the theory of natural selection proposed by Charles Darwin."
